This time, I will show you another drawing I made, which I was very proud of at the time, even though I made it without feeling anything for it. But today, looking at it again, I discovered something.
I don't know, before it seemed like just the face of a woman, perhaps with a slightly melancholic look, but I didn't think much of it. Now it's as if, when I see it, it conveys something more.
I would like you to join me in discovering it, and I would also like to hear your opinions at the end of the post (I realize that in most of my drawings, I try to get you to discover the feeling behind them with me, I like that dynamic). Let's go!
We start by drawing a circle and dividing it with a cross, with a horizontal and vertical line that splits the circle into 4 parts. Above the line that divides the circle horizontally, we will draw another horizontal line.
The upper horizontal line will define where I will draw the beginning of the hair.
The horizontal line that divides the circle in half is drawn to approximately locate the eyes.
And below this, we will draw another one to locate the nose. The distance between the hairline and the eye line should be the same as that between the eyes and the nose. The same applies from the nose to the chin.
Or at least that's what I was taught at that time, but I discovered that not all faces follow the same rule, so now I draw more by instinct and find it more enjoyable. But let's continue with the tutorial for now.
I started by sketching the eyes. Everything is easier when drawing a face from the front. If you notice, to draw an eye, I use short straight lines instead of curved ones because it's easier to manage. I wanted to make eyes oriented downward, and that already tells us a lot about the tone of this drawing. I used typical circles for the irises, and notice how I drew the tear duct and the detail on the lower eyelid; these are details to which, ironically, I don't pay much attention, and that was my problem before: giving too much importance to detail, barely starting the drawing. Oh, let's not forget the folds of the upper eyelids, which I also drew with straight lines.
On the other hand, I simplified the nose with three circles following the shape and direction of the nose I wanted to draw. It makes me think about how I used to see noses as the most difficult part of the drawing, but it's really not as complicated as I once thought.
Lastly, I didn't overthink the mouth either, simply using straight lines to shape the upper and lower lip, taking a little more time to outline the separation between the two, giving it a some curvature.
From here on, the steps are simpler since I've practically outlined the elements of the face. Something I don't like about my past self was that I used to draw the structure of the face/skull first, and then add the facial elements. I learned that drawing the elements on their own and then the face structure gives a more spontaneous finish; good for me, for stepping out of my comfort zone.
Continuing with the tutorial, I first outlined the eyes, paying special attention to the areas that would be darker due to the presence of eyelashes. I also drew the lines above the eyes to guide me in drawing the eyebrows.
Afterward, I focused on filling in the irises, drawing the pupil, and shading the inside and outside of the eye. Finally, I drew the eyelashes, which, in fact, would be the ones contributing to the shading in the eye.
Here, with quick strokes and following the conventional direction in which hair grows, I drew the eyebrows. I feel that sometimes, thin eyebrows add a more dramatic touch to the drawing; or maybe it's just because they remind me of the makeup from the 1930s.
On the other hand, this was the moment to add more dramatic shadows to the face, starting with the shadows that are usually found just below the beginning of the eyebrows and on the sides of the nose, as its volume contributes to those shadows.
I also drew some shadows on the lower eyelid, I like drawing them... but depending on their extent, the feeling the drawing conveys to me will change. For example, the shadows here are quite noticeable and considerably extended; I feel that this look conveys a rather sad, tired feeling to me. Sometimes I feel that way, as part of life, I suppose.
This was the moment where I started to blend more. I traced the silhouette of the nose and spread graphite over the entire area, then blended it with the help of some toilet paper.
Then, I added highlights with an eraser, especially on the bridge and tip of the nose, making the tip look like a small ball. After that, I slightly emphasized the lines in the areas where there would be a bit more shadow.
Finally, I ended up erasing the sketch of the mouth to draw a similar one but more open. At the time, I was so engrossed that I didn't realize the mistake. Anyway, I added color to the lips and blended it, then added darker color to the slightly open area of the lips.
Here, I focused on adding much more depth... You'd be surprised that I did this using the same pencil because, to me, it doesn't show. I kept adding "color" and blending until I reached the desired tone. Then, I intensified the pigment in the corners and inner edges of the lips, as well as the lower edge of the lips. With an eraser, I added some highlights.
Now comes the part that is simpler for me to explain.
I sketched the hair, keeping in mind that I wanted the girl to look like she was lying on a surface. I'm not sure if I achieved it.
I took the task of outlining large strands, following the direction of how they would look if they were delicately spread out on a surface.
Also, if you look closely, you'll notice that I sketched the girl's shoulders and arms. Remember to draw the trapezius muscles between the neck and shoulders.
The following steps were simpler: I focused on adding "color to the hair" by passing my pencil and blending several times until I achieved the desired tone.
I outlined some individual strands and made many strokes, especially at the hairline, leaving an empty space where the scalp is usually visible.
I also added "shadows" or more color intensity to specific strands and used the eraser to add highlights in some points of the hair.
Finally, starting from the sketch, I traced the body. I'm not very happy with the left arm, but it doesn't look too bad either. I subtly drew the collarbones.
Then, I added shadows to the neck area, making a barely noticeable shadow that is contributed by the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
I also added some shadows to the collarbones, shoulders, and arms.
I didn't detail the body too much, and the reality is: I don't know how to draw bodies. But I believe one thing: if my main focus is going to be the face, then that's what needs the most attention, and if it's the body, then I detail the face less. At least for now, but I'm still trying, day by day, to practice at least the female figure. However, I think today I should focus a bit on male figures... The male body is also art, right?
And that's it.
I called her a clown because that's the vibe her face gives me, especially her lips that look like those of a sad clown. She’s tired, as I mentioned.
I am surprised by my useless ability to make my drawings never even remotely resemble the reference photo, even when I do the best sketch I can. Although it might also be a problem with my own perception of my drawings.
Anyway, maybe if I look on the bright side... Or at least I try, I'm using the references as inspiration to create my own thing. I don't know, in the end, maybe even without realizing it, I'm imbuing my portraits with a piece of my heart.
But I think the most probable reason is that I simply don't know how to follow references yet. So, I'll keep practicing.
I had forgotten the habit of taking a close-up photo to better appreciate it. Here it is. My gray clown.
Without anything else to add… Take care, drink water, and don't forget to smile. Love you! See you in the next post, bye!
