As young people, we daily interact with our peer and association because this is necessary for our psychology and social development. However,we often get subjected to influences as a result of such kind of association. We therefore need to be equipped with Skills to be able to refuse negative Peer influences.

What is Peer Pressure ?

Peer pressure is the influence exerted on one person by another from the same peer group which usually results or causes negative effect or undesirable outcome. E.g. Being persuaded to smoke,drink or have sex against one’s will or even steal.

IMPLICATION OF PEER PRESSURE

  1. It can have negative influence on the individual’s personal decision and values.
    2.It brings about confusion in thoughts and in a person’s action
  2. It brings a lot of regrets and failure
  3. A lot of adolescents sexuality problems will be encouraged.

PREVENTION OF PEER PRESSURE

Say “no” without giving reasons
Say “no” and leave it at that
Say “no” without an excuse
Say “no” without suggesting an alternative
Use your body to signal “no” I.e stand back, hold up your hands ,shake your head,et.c
Use your face to signal “no” i.e make a face,frown,grimace,look disgusted with the idea
Leave the environment,making it clear that you want nothing to do with the situation.

Counselors
Social Welfare Officers
Nurses/Doctors.
