I hope you have spent some nice days surrounded by family and friends this Christmas and I take this first post in the Pinmapple community to wish you a Happy New Year 2023.
By the way, how long is it to congratulate the entrance to the New Year?
It is a question to which I put a deadline and it is the Three Wise Men which is tomorrow January 6th.
About a month and a half ago for work reasons I was for three days staying in the city of Porto (Portugal). It is a city of which I am frankly in love for its beauty, for its gestes and for its artistic heritage.
Due to the fact that my work activity those three days was 25 kilometers away from Porto, that in the month of November around 17:30 it is already dark in Porto and that two of the days I was in the city it was pouring rain, my possibility of visiting the city center was more limited than I would like. However, I managed to visit almost all the places I had in mind before my arrival in the city and even some of them twice, although the first time I was completely soaked by a surprise storm.
The three days I was in Porto, I stayed at the Hotel Erostars Heroismo, a nice hotel that is a little far from the center, but just enough to make a 20 minute walk to the downtown area of Porto (Cathedral, San Bento Station, Luis I Bridge, etc.) and that is close to a small church that I liked very much for its large external decoration with painted tiles.
Un paseo truncado por la lluvia
My first evening in Porto was supposed to be a quiet one. I arrived in Porto around 18:00 h and after checking in at the hotel I went for a walk to the city centre. Along the way I came across several places of interest, such as the Teatro Nacional Sao Joao or the spectacular San Bento train station, which I will tell you more about later.
A walk cut short by rain
My first evening in Porto was supposed to be a quiet one. I arrived in Porto around 18:00 h and after checking in at the hotel I went for a walk to the city centre. Along the way I came across several places of interest, such as the National Theatre of Sao Joao or the spectacular train station of San Bento, which I will tell you more about later.
But everything suddenly changed when I was on my way to the Porto Cathedral, which is 200 metres from Sao Bento station. When I was standing next to the equestrian statue of Vimara Peres, it was as if the sky suddenly broke and there was a pool of water inside. I was literally soaked from top to bottom without the possibility of taking shelter, so I hurriedly took a picture of the cathedral and the pilori, but with the hope that one of the days I was in Porto I would be able to get closer without rain and during the day.
The rain continued on my afternoons in Porto.
During the next two days that I was in Porto, I had the bad luck to arrive at the hotel around 19:00 h and at the same time it was raining heavily, so I could not go to the city centre and enjoy this beautiful city. However, the second afternoon of rain, in one of those moments when it stopped for about an hour, I went for a walk around the hotel and during this walk I came across one of my great passions, which is urban art.
Specifically, I came across a mural tribute to the women water carriers that existed in the city several decades ago by the muralist Godmess, which is located on Rua Campo 24 de Agosto and whose story is that this mural is located in the same place where the Mijavelha water ark used to be, a place where water was stored by the women water carriers, which was then sold throughout the city.
On my way back to the hotel by a different route to the mural of the water bearers, I came across a multitude of graffiti on the walls that caught my attention, such as the one I show below of a mouse hiding from a fierce cat. This presumably illegal mural is located near the Bonfim church.
However, when I was about to finish the walk it started to rain again and like a cat running away from the rain I went to the hotel where I had a delicious bacalao as natas for dinner.
The stars aligned
In Spain, when two coincidences occur simultaneously, it is said that the stars have aligned. This is what happened to me the last afternoon I was in Porto. On the one hand, I finished my training course at 15:00 and, on the other hand, the rain had disappeared, leaving the sun shining on my arrival in Porto with a beautiful winter sunset over the Douro River.
After leaving my laptop and putting on comfortable clothes for walking, I left the hotel towards the historic centre of Porto, walking along the Douro river and being able to contemplate several of the great bridges that connect the two parts of the city, such as the Dona Maria Pia Bridge and the Infante Bridge from the Fontaiñas viewpoint.
At the same time, at the Fontaiñas viewpoint I was able to enjoy a pleasant atmosphere where several street artists were playing music in the vicinity of the fountain and the monument in homage to the women porters.
Then, in order to reach the historic center with a good quality of light, I continued walking along Rua das Fontaiñas to a viewpoint that gave me a full view of both the Infante Bridge and the Luis I Bridge where one could contemplate the beauty of the Douro River when the sun reflects on its waters.
After finding that the street I was on had no exit and I was so close to get to the center, I had to go back a few meters and after crossing a public parking I reached the vicinity of the Fernandiña Wall of the fourteenth century, but on the opposite side of the bridge Luis I, where I found a sculpture of Arnaldo Gama.
Once I was very close to the center, I went to contemplate the statue of Vimara Peres, the Cathedral and the Pylorus without the inconvenience of the rain and with the intention of taking advantage of a fisheye lens that I had bought for my smartphone to take a picture for a contest that was going on at that time in #pob.
With the tranquility of not having the rain on my head like last time. I spent some time contemplating the city. So that certain buildings caught my attention and I made a route to go through several of them before sunset, as I wanted to be at sunset on the Luis I Bridge to see the sun set behind the Douro River.
My first stop was again to go to the San Bento train station. In this station, which is located in the center of Porto, there is a real museum with the representation through more than twenty thousand tiles of different events in the history of northern Portugal, such as:
The battle of Valdevez.
The conquest of Ceuta in 1415.
Egas Moniz with his sons and King Alfonso VII of Leon and Castile in the 12th century.
Being this place one of the most beautiful I have seen in my life.
After being amazed with the station of Sao Bento, I continued my tour of the city and headed to the municipal chamber of Porto. Although to get there I encountered great difficulty due to the numerous streets that were cut by works that were being carried out in the vicinity.
Once I had reached the square where the municipal chamber is located, when I turned around I saw a large tower and according to my map this tower should be the main tower of the Church of the Clerics. Which has a large tower that I did not manage to photograph well with my smartphone, so I share with you the other facade that I could photograph completely.
With this walk and due to the numerous works I did not want to linger any longer in this area of the city and hurriedly went to the Luis I bridge where one can see from the heights several gifts for the retina.
The first is to see the Fernandiña Wall that served as a defensive wall of the city from the fourteenth century.
The second gift for the retina, and no less important, was to contemplate from this bridge the Serra del Pilar monastery on the other side of the bridge.
The third gift is immaterial and perhaps the most beautiful is to see the sunset over the Douro River and the Ribeira district.
And when I was fully satisfied, I came across an old street art mural that is a delight for fans like me of this type of street art.
As night was coming, I decided to return to the hotel, but first I stopped again at the church of San Ildefonso as on the first night, but this time without rain and with a good atmosphere due to the flea market that was in the square in front of the church.
Finally I arrived at the hotel and how could it be otherwise I ordered again cod for dinner. This time a cod with broa that was delicious and while I was having dinner I was eager to get back to this city with more calm and get to know better the interior of the cathedral, the churches and other points of interest that I could not visit this time.
I hope you like this tour of the beautiful city of Porto.
