After a recent redevelopment, i required a retaining wall, which I considered building in concrete, however, on the property there is a massive resource of rounded river rocks. It seems that block is on an old riverbed, so every time a hole is dug, a new rock appears!
So I thought I would try something different, and build a dry stone wall. This seemed to work well, I got all the rocks I could find stacked up neatly in a 9 meter length about 1 meter high, and it looked great, but after a few months, the weeds started to pop out, which was a constant battle to remove and caused the random rock here and there to drop out, so I thought there has to be a better way. I pulled it all down again!
So I am back to a large pile of rocks and no retaining wall. I really wanted to wall to be built of the rocks on site, but it needed to be more maintenance free, so a mortered wall was the solution.
A concrete slab as a base, a reinforced spine made from bessar blocks and then the rocks! It was a weekened project (over many weekends!) so it progressed slowly, but it slowly emerged from the mud to be the wall I wanted it to be, it is very satisifying to have build something that appears so permanent all by yourself!
