Oh I love this!
What makes me sad? Eric asked in another of his Monday memoir installments. I couldn’t think of anything, other than a loved ones dying, that makes me truly sad. This Monday morning I discovered what can make me instantly bereft - when someone I love as dearly as I love this daughter leaves to go back to their lives, that don’t intersect very often with mine in real time.
How much longer can we detain the adult child who's home for a visit - this seems to be a superpower that all loving parents instinctively wield over us. It takes forever just to get to the car. You open the car door. Dad keeps talking, keeps detaining.... let me check your oil! ... Mom: "Wait, I have some kale in the garden for you." (Neither of us eats kale.)
We raise them 24/7 for their first 18 years, and then the fledglings fly off.
Yesterday, Miles drove off again, and for once, I didn't weep.
This post is 12 days old - I'm so sorry I keep failing to check in more often!!!!
Beautiful photo, and beautiful sentiment - how much we love reconnecting, and how hard it is to part company again.
