Hello to the whole Hive community! Today I’d like to share with you a little about my journey and academic experience in this wonderful degree programme: Nursing.
A start to ‘warm up’
We started the first semester quite gently, so to speak, warming up for what lay ahead. During those first few months, we had to take in and learn as much theory as possible, preparing ourselves mentally for when the time came to make the leap into practical work.
They were intense days of study where we learnt a bit of everything, laying the most essential foundations of the profession. My classmates and I were extremely excited, but also very nervous. Part of that adrenaline came from organising the process of having our uniforms made in time for when we would be going to a hospital, pharmacy or clinic to experience the real-world environment.
Our first clinical placements at the ‘El Venerable’ clinic
As the semester was drawing to a close, we began our practical placements at the “El Venerable” clinic. There, the aim was to practise basic procedures amongst ourselves: the step-by-step process of inserting a peripheral line, how to administer an intramuscular injection, and other essential care tasks.
To be honest, the first day didn’t go entirely to plan! 😂
We were all hyperventilating with nerves because it was our first time performing a real procedure with a needle. Some of us had a bit of a ‘mishap’ because the fluid seeped into our veins or we ended up with small bruises. But hey, that’s just how it goes: we realised that’s also part of the learning process and of getting over our fear.
Personally, when I had to apply the bandage for the first time, I didn’t know how to do it properly and ended up leaving a small bruise on my partner’s little hand 🙈. Luckily, by the second practice session I was much more relaxed and managed to apply the bandage without too many problems.
Rules of the trade and the essential first-aid kit
During our time at the clinic, the instructors also explained to us how things work in the department and the internal dynamics. One of the essential rules they made clear to us was that each of us must prepare and always keep to hand an emergency kit containing basic nursing supplies.
For the second term, which is about to begin, we must ensure our kit is fully prepared with:
🩺 Blood pressure monitor
🌡️ Thermometer
🩹 Gauze and plasters
✂️ Scissors
🧤 Gloves
🪢 Tourniquet
✏️ Pencil or pen
Ready for what’s to come
It was an extremely productive and enjoyable day during which we learnt a great deal as a team. I know that nursing requires a great deal of dedication, patience and constant practice, but taking these first steps confirms to me that I’m on the right track. I hope to keep learning more every day and to share this journey with you all here!
Thank you, friends, for reading 🙏 Best wishes and lots of hugs.
