well I certainly doubt a lawsuit would be involved :) I am personally very hard to offend, nigh on impossible. "People" is becoming more and more common and doesn't really sound strange as a native English speaker. I went to college in the American south for a while and picked up "y'all" which I really like, but is probably harder to pull off unless you are a native speaker LOL. It would be hard to deny that there is a lot of sexism inherent in many common phrases. Probably the best example is the use of "pussy" to mean coward and also female genitalia, doesn't get much more obvious than that. But referring to a group of people as guys, however innocent the intention, really does kind of minimize the female presence and experience. People is a way more inclusive term. Until recently many style/grammar guides suggested using he/his as default because English lacks a gender neutral pronoun, but now the movement to use "their" has really picked up steem. So, things change, and of course you are never going to avoid offending everyone all the time - but when you become aware of a potentially offensive word choice, why not use a different one?
