When my husband and I decided to move to La Guaira, it was very important for us to find a good place where we could connect with others who shared our faith.

We came from a church in Caracas that we loved dearly, but the distance made it difficult for us to keep attending, so we began looking for a church near where we were going to live.

As it turned out, we were very fortunate to find a place just three blocks away. But that wasn’t the only reason we decided to stay; this church was quite unique—most of the people attending were children and teenagers, which really caught our attention.

Most of these children came from broken homes; some lived with a grandmother, an aunt, or another relative—anyone other than their own parents 😔. There were even two underage girls who were living entirely on their own.

All of this deeply touched our hearts, and we realized it was the right place for us to serve God.

The church pastor was a very young man named Ricardo—he was around 30 at the time. He had a somewhat shy personality, but he exuded great gentleness and a deep love for his work. He welcomed us warmly, and our relationship grew stronger; there was a strong sense of unity and mutual trust.

We served in this church for three years—it became our life. We got to know the children and teenagers, and our home became a place to teach them the Word of God; at times, we also provided them with shelter, food, and entertainment. These young people were never idle—they had no time to waste, as they were busy with their studies and soccer practice, which was a true passion for many of them.

Ultimately, my husband left his business in Caracas to dedicate himself entirely to this beautiful mission. Together, we did work there that I will always remember as one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life—working with children and teenagers is truly priceless.

Unfortunately, as time went on, differences arose between us and the pastor. He even began to suspect that my husband wanted to take his position, simply because the children loved spending time with us—which, in reality, was only because my husband and I dedicated so much of our time to them.

The rift grew deeper over time. We met on several occasions to try to clear things up, but stubbornness and pride on both sides—compounded by various misunderstandings—ended up breaking the beautiful relationship we had built.

The atmosphere turned hostile, and with heavy hearts, my husband and I decided to leave. This decision brought with it many difficult challenges to face, but what we regretted most was the loss of a friendship and the realization that our service to the children in that place had come to an end. 💔

We all regretted it; I remember how some of the teenagers and children would call out for us to return, but sometimes, for the sake of peace, difficult decisions must be made.

To make a long story short, a few years passed, and we never spoke to the pastor again—until the terrible tragedy of the earthquake occurred.

A couple of days after the tragedy, we learned that the pastor’s wife and their youngest daughter were missing. She had been pregnant, and they had two other children—a boy and a teenage girl. Sadly, the lifeless bodies of the pastor’s wife and their youngest daughter were found in the ruins of the building where they lived. 💔

They lived in the same residential area as we did, though on a different street; that entire place was left completely devastated.

Hearing this news was deeply painful. I cannot imagine the agony Pastor Ricardo must be feeling right now—not only did he lose his home—which had taken so much sacrifice to acquire—but he also lost his life partner and his little girl. My God, so many dreams that will now go unfulfilled.

When we were finally able to reach him, there were no words that could truly suffice; we simply let him know that he could count on us and that we felt his pain as if it were our own.

A few days later, my husband happened to run into the pastor during a census being conducted in Caracas. My husband, clearly moved, told me that as soon as they saw each other, they embraced and wept together.

Reflecting on all of this, I realize that while this tragedy has left many wounds, it has also served to heal others.

We are now in constant contact with Pastor Ricardo, supporting one another in various ways and leaving behind the misunderstandings that had once caused our relationship to fracture.

We thank God for the strength he has shown, and we continue to pray that, even amidst such profound pain, he and his family may find strength, comfort, and peace. 🙏🏼
