Spring 2021: Ode to Elm Trees & Morels

When I was just a kid, I remember that I was playing a lot outside in the neighborhood but also in parks & forests nearby in my extraordinary beautiful homeland Croatia. I also remember that I was noticing the strange elm's skin in that time & was wondering why is it so different than the skin of other trees. I also don't remember if I even new that it's an elm tree nor actually why its skin so deformed...

This is a smaller specimen, approximately 2-3 m tall.

I always liked the special look of this tree & its skin.

This is a much larger specimen - grown to around 15 m tall.

On the photos below you can see very young leaves in mid spring cause this species is very unique with another characteristic - it shows its flowers much before the leaves. When the flowers are slowly becoming seeds, only then the leaves appear. Unfortunately, I have no photos of the flowers but I remember they are small & pinkish.

Maybe you wonder why I emphasize so much the elms?! For sure it's not for Freddy Kruger! I always hated Freddy Kruger's movies!
It's because of the morel mushrooms which love to grow near or even in symbiosis with elms, which is still not scientifically proven. Morels are very mysterious! They also like ash trees a lot! Only the ashes are not so interesting like elms are!

This is how elm forest looks like in early spring, mid of April.

Morels love to grow on the edge of the forest, especially where are freshly cut, rotten or dying elms.

On this photo you can count 5 morels - 1 in the basket & 5 growing on the floor! Do you see them???
