have you ever heard of St. Lambert church in Duesseldorf, Germany? You should, because it is a story with a twist. If you take a look at the picture, you will notice that the tower is twisted. Lots of legends have been told to explain this unique architecture. The most popular one is the legend of a young lady who was supposed to walk down the aisle in this church.
It happened long long ago, at a time where Duesseldorf was still a village, the church had a lot of influence, and young ladies were tested for their virginity before they were allowed to marry. Once a young lady, who was a member of the upper class in Duesseldorf, was forced to get married in an arranged marriage. Unfortunately this young lady took no stock in the old traditions and so she had been involved in many love affairs.
However she knew, that she had to marry her fiance to live a secure life. So she used a trick to convince everybody of her virginity. Well, everybody except the church. In a time where walls had ears, the tower knew about her little secret. On the day of her marriage, when she was walking down the aisle the church was full of shame because this young lady has brought disgrace over this holy building. Being embarrassed it turned its head away from the wedding. It didn´t want to witness this sacrilege and it swore to itself that it would not turn its head back to a straight position before a real virgin was getting married in it.
The church is still in office and people are still getting married in it, but as you can see the tower is still twisted...
The official, and more credible story is, that when the original tower was set to fire because of a lightning strike, the architect used wet wood to rebuild the roof truss. When the wood dried out, it began to move and twisted the whole tower to its recent appearance.
