I have many vegan and veggie friends. Some of my vegan friends will even cook me meat and I tell the they do not have to. Usually chicken or fish but I still don't NEED them to do that. Always thought that was amazing. I think vegetarianism is much broader than veganism. Many do become vegetarian in order to lower the harm they do to other life forms while many do it as a diet for health reasons, some both. Or as a stepping stone. Many people do not have access to vegan options even if they wanted to. Hopefully with future agriculture changes, even if its just due to climate change or other environmental issues, we will see more options on a global scale and less livestock. The livestock waste itself is a big issue. Not the sewage waste, the wasted butcherings and meat. I try to buy local when I can and lower my general meat intake. If I ever became vegan I think I would still eat eggs, if I had chickens (pets or rescues) or knew where they came from/had got to live their little chicken lives, since they will lay them anyways. I wouldn't kill the older hens once they stopped producing even if I don't become vegan. I have an aunt that has a bunch of chickens in here backyard and they are happier than some dogs I've seen. They're cool pets or rescues to have around, but many urban locations wont allow them. I have a lot of respect for vegans, and the food. Unless its fake bacon, Id rather just not eat bacon.
If anyone else is reading this and I made you think about rescuing a hen, check out your local shelter or rescue. Chickens come in often and make cool pets. Not great for apartments unless you have a large patio area maybe. Quails are great in an apartment and are very quiet but I do not know how often those show up at shelters/rescues. Same with many other birds and pets you normally think of as food or food producers.
