Hello HIVEs
Like every year, my wife and I rode through Germany with our tandem. This time we started from Steinhagen in the direction of the Weser. The first stop was Hameln. There we met up with friends. So we didn't have time for a night-time light painting. The next day we went on to Bad Karlshafen. A baroque harbour surrounded by white squares of houses. On the outskirts of the town is the Huguenot Tower on a rocky spur of the Hessian Cliffs. The building was opened in 1913 in the style of ruined architecture. The tower is freely accessible all day. The hiking trail is not particularly well signposted. We climbed the mountain at dusk. It takes half an hour to walk from the harbour to the top of the tower. The path is not in good condition. For us it was not much of a challenge, as sturdy shoes and good torches are basic equipment for us light painters. We arrived at the tower at blue hour. The tower and the spiral staircase with its 100 steps are in good condition.
Wie jedes Jahr, fuhren meine Frau und ich mit unserem Tandem durch Deutschland. Diesmal starteten wir von Steinhagen in Richtung Weser. Die erste Station war Hameln. Dort trafen wir uns mit Freunden. Für ein nächtliches Lightpainting hatten wir deshalb keine Zeit. Am nächsten Tag ging es weiter nach Bad Karlshafen. Einem von weißen Häuserkarrees eingesäumten Barockhafen. Am Rande der Stadt befindet sich der Hugenottenturm auf einem Felssporn der Hessischen Klippen. 1913 wurde das Bauwerk im Stil der Ruinenarchitektur eröffnet. Der Turm ist ganztägig frei zugänglich. Der Wanderweg ist nicht besonders gut ausgeschildert. Wir stiegen bei Dämmerung auf den Berg. Eine halbe Stunde dauert die Wanderung vom Hafen bis auf den Turm. Der Weg ist in keinem guten Zustand. Für uns war es keine große Herausforderung, da festes Schuhwerk und gute Taschenlampen für uns Lightpainter zur Grundausstattung gehören. Zur blauen Stunde kamen wir am Turm an. Der Turm und die Wendeltreppe mit ihren 100 Stufen sind in einem guten Zustand.

The cover photo shows Geane in the entrance to the tower. The tower was lit with a NOCTIGON DM11 and orange filter. I lit the interior with an EMISAR D18 with a blue filter.
Auf dem Titelbild ist Geane im Eingang zum Turm zu sehen. Der Turm wurde mit einer NOCTIGON DM11 und orangenem Filter angeleuchtet. Den Innenraum beleuchtete ich mit einer EMISAR D18 mit blauen Filter.

Bad Karlshafen
From the tower we enjoyed a fantastic view over the Weser, Bad Karlshafen and the wooded hillsides of Solling and Reinhardswald.
Vom Turm genossen wir einen fantastischen Ausblick über die Weser, Bad Karlshafen und die bewaldeten Berghänge von Solling und Reinhardswald.

First I tried a camera rotation of 180°. This was not really convincing. So the next attempt was with a 45° rotation.
Zuerst probierte ich eine Kamerarotation um 180°. Das wirkte noch nicht wirklich überzeugend. Also folgte der nächste Versuch mit 45° -Rotation.

The Stairs
I liked that better already. Next I staged the spiral staircase. For this, I set up the camera on the ground and pointed the lens vertically upwards.
Das gefiel mir schon besser. Als nächstes setzte ich die Wendeltreppe in Szene.
Dafür baute ich die Kamera am Boden auf und richtete das Objektiv senkrecht nach oben aus.

That didn't really seem exciting yet, so I started playing with the CRT (camera rotation tool) here too.
Das wirkte noch nicht wirklich spannend, also begann ich auch hier mit dem CRT (Camera-Rotation-Tool) zu spielen.

The picture above shows a 90° rotation. The scene was lit with a NOCTIGON DM11.
Im Bild oben ist eine 90° -Rotation zu sehen. Ausgeleuchtet wurde die Szene mit einer NOCTIGON DM11.

During this shot I let the camera rotate 180°. I also used an orange colour filter on the NOCTIGON DM11. As you may have noticed, my equipment was minimal. Everything fit into a small photo backpack. You don't need huge equipment to take these not everyday pictures.
On the following pictures you can see a few impressions of the bike tour.
Während dieser Aufnahme ließ ich die Kamera um 180° rotieren. Zusätzlich setzte ich einen orangenen Farbfilter an der NOCTIGON DM11 ein.
Wir ihr bestimmt schon bemerkt habt, war meine Ausrüstung minimal. Alles passte in einen kleinen Fotorucksack. Es bedarf keiner riesigen Ausrüstung, um diese nicht alltäglichen Bilder aufzunehmen.

The Tour
We had already covered 190km by the time we reached Bad Karlshafen. We passed beautiful river landscapes, old half-timbered houses, monasteries, castles and palaces until we reached Hann. Münden. There, the two major headwaters, the Werra and the Fulda, join to form the Weser. By then it was 230 km.
Bis Bad Karlshafen hatten wir bereits 190km zurückgelegt.
Vorbei an herrlichen Flusslandschaften, alten Fachwerkhäusern, Klostern, Burgen und Schlössern bis nach Hann. Münden, wo sich die beiden großen Quellflüsse, Werra und Fulda zur Weser vereinigen, waren es dann schon 230km.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?
Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
