Hello, music lovers. On this last Tuesday of March, I’m bringing you a new selection of three songs for this special edition of Three Tunes Tuesday, a weekly feature hosted by our friend @ablaze in the Music community. This time, I’ll set aside Spanish-speaking bands and artists to introduce you to a band that played a huge role in my teenage years and early adulthood. Many of you reading this will likely already know this band, given how popular they are in the music industry. I’m talking about none other than Linkin Park, an American Alternative Rock band that rose to fame in the early 2000s thanks to their rhythm and their unique blend of Rap, Rock, and Nu Metal. Their songs have become an anthem for an entire generation, of which I am a part, having been born in the ’90s as well. I have many fond memories of my teenage years when I constantly listened to their songs both at school and outside of it—practically everywhere. The three songs I’ll mention below are part of that Playlist I listened to and replayed countless times when I was just in middle and high school. They mark a very emotional and innocent part of my life because I got to know a lot of people and felt a lot of things back then. Not to mention the huge number of mistakes and stupid things I did during that time, which later led me to develop a sort of illusory depression or false depression where I always dressed in black and acted like I didn’t care about anything.

En éste último martes del mes de marzo les traigo una nueva selección de tres canciones para este especial de Three Tunes Tuesday que semanalmente realiza como actividad nuestro amigo @ablaze en la comunidad de Música. Esta vez dejaré a un lado a las bandas y artistas de habla española para presentarles a una banda que ha marcado gran parte de mi adolescencia y juventud. Posiblemente muchos de los que me lean conocerán a esta banda debido a lo populares que son en la industria de la música. Estoy hablando de nada más ni nada menos que de Linkin Park, una banda estadounidense de Rock Alternativo que se ha vuelto popular desde principios de los años 2000 debido a su ritmo y su manera tan original de mezclar el Rap con el Rock y el Nü Metal. Sus canciones se han vuelto un himno para toda una generación de la cual yo soy parte al haber nacido también en los años 90. Tengo muchos recuerdos agradables de mi adolescencia cuando constantemente escuchaba sus canciones tanto en la escuela como fuera de ella y en todas partes, prácticamente. Las tres canciones que les mencionaré a continuación forman parte de dicha Playlist que escuchaba y repetía incontables veces cuando apenas estudiaba en secundaria y preparatoria. Marcan una parte muy emotiva e inocente de mi vida debido a que llegué a conocer a mucha gente y sentir muchas cosas en aquel entonces. Eso sin contar la enrome cantidad de errores y estupideces que hacía en aquella época, lo cual me hicieron desarrollar después una especie de depresión ilusoria o falsa depresión donde siempre me vestía de negro y me compraba como el que no le importaba nada.

Let’s say this is the song that fully defined Linkin Park’s style as a band in the early 2000s with the release of their debut album, Hybrid Theory. Just as the title of their debut album suggests, “Papercut” is a kind of hybrid that blends elements of Rap with Alternative Rock—or rather, Nu-Metal, as it was known back then. The song is about paranoia and the internal struggle one has with life’s insecurities. The lyrics describe a person who has no idea why they’re tense and feels like someone is watching them, like a “face inside my skin”. It’s interesting how Papercut describes a person’s anxiety and paranoia as if they had a “face inside me”. That face, which is constantly referenced throughout the song, is that feeling of insecurity that anyone might experience at some point in their life. Back then, when I listened to this song countless times at school, I might not have known at all what anxiety was or even how it felt. It wasn’t until much later that I experienced it firsthand, facing so many challenges and responsibilities I had to fulfill, and the faces of others I didn’t want to disappoint. Those faces ended up being a reflection of what I had been feeling inside for a long time—like a paper cut, small but sharp, that I couldn’t stop feeling. That’s why phrases like “a face I carry inside,” “a face that wakes up when I close my eyes”, “a face that watches me every time I lie”, and “a face that laughs every time I fall” really hit home in my subconscious, since that was exactly what I experienced back then. These days, I don’t have any anxiety or worries in my life that would make me lose myself, but I did end up liking the song because of its rhythm.

Digamos que es la canción que definió por completo el estilo que posee Linkin Park como banda a principios de los 2000 con el lanzamiento de su primer álbum llamado Hybrid Theory. Tal y como lo dice el título del álbum debut, Papercut es una especie de híbrido que mezcla algo de Rap con Rock Alternativo, o mejor dicho Nü Metal en aquel entonces. La canción trata sobre la paranoia y la lucha interna que uno tiene con las inseguridades de la vida. La letra describe a una persona que no tiene idea de por qué está tensa y siente que alguien lo está observando, como un “rostro dentro de mi piel”. Es interesante cómo Papercut describe la ansiedad y la paranoia de una persona como si tuviera un “rostro dentro de mí”. Dicho rostro del cual se refiere constantemente a lo largo de la canción es esa sensación de inseguridad que cualquier persona puede llegar a experimentar en algún momento de su vida. Puede que en aquel entonces cuando escuchaba incontables veces ésta canción en la escuela no conociera para nada lo que es la ansiedad o siquiera cómo se sentía. No fue sino tiempo después que llegué a experimentar eso en carne propia al verme frente a tantas pruebas y responsabilidades que debía cumplir y rostro de terceros que no quería decepcionar. Dichos rostros terminaron siendo un reflejo de lo que llegué a sentir en mi interior por un largo tiempo, como una cortada de papel, pequeña pero punzante que no dejaba de sentir. Es por eso que frases como “un rostro que llevo dentro”, “un rostro que se despierta cuando cierro los ojos”, “un rostro que me observa cada vez que miento” y “un rostro que ríe cada vez que caigo” son los que golpean fuertemente en mi subconsciente ya que era exactamente eso lo que experimenté en su momento. Actualmente, no tengo ninguna ansiedad o inquietud en mi vida como para dejarme llevar, pero sí me terminó gustando la canción por el ritmo que tiene.

Let’s move on to another iconic, unforgettable, and quite powerful song by the American Alternative Rock band Linkin Park. “Numb” is one of the band’s most popular singles and is featured on their second studio album, Meteora (2003). It offers a perfect blend of Nu-Metal and Alternative Rock—the musical style that defined Linkin Park at the time. The lyrics speak of the intense pressure one feels when trying to meet the high expectations others have of you. It’s like an anthem dedicated to the search for identity. The lyrics tell of a man tired of “being what you want me to be,” “pressured to follow in your footsteps.” They also speak of feeling “hopeless, lost beneath the surface.” The word “numb” is part of the chorus, describing the protagonist’s complete lack of sensitivity to the pressure and high demands placed on him by others. He also says he feels “suffocated” and “on the verge of losing control,” because “everything you thought I’d be has crumbled before my eyes”. I think there’s no better way to describe that feeling of disappointment others feel when you don’t meet their expectations. Yes, I’ve experienced that sense of chaos, pressure, and numb-ness in the past as well. That’s why right now I can actually relate to what this song says. However, back in my teenage years, I seriously doubt I even understood what the song was saying. But well, now is when I long for that innocence, since the feeling of indifference is something I don’t recommend at all. After disappointing so many people by failing to meet their expectations of me, it’s hard to feel anything genuine for someone without worrying first.

Vamos con otra canción icónica, inolvidable y bastante fuerte de nuestra banda estadounidense de Rock Alternativo, Linkin Park. Numb es uno de los sencillos más populares que posee la banda y que forma parte del segundo álbum de estudio llamado Meteora (2003). Tiene una mezcla perfecta de Nü Metal con Rock Alternativo que ya era el estilo de música que identificaba a Linkin Park en aquella época. Su letra habla de la fuerte presión que uno tiene al intentar cumplir con las altas expectativas que tienen los demás sobre tí. Es como un himno dedicado a la búsqueda de la identidad. La letra nos habla de un hombre cansado de “ser lo que tú quieres que sea”, “presionado por seguir tus pasos”. También habla de sentirse “desesperanzado, perdido bajo la superficie”. La palabra “insensible” es parte del coro, que describe un estado nulo de sensibilidad del protagonista ante dicha presión y altas exigencias que recibe por parte de los demás. También dice sentirse “asfixiado” y “a punto de perder el control”, debido a que “todo lo que pensaste que sería, se ha desmoronado frente a mí”. Creo que no hay mejor forma de describir esa sensación de desilusión que los demás sienten al no cumplirles. Si, esa sensación de descontrol, presión e insensibilidad lo he experimentado también en el pasado. Es por eso que ahora mismo sí puedo llegar a sentirme en parte identificado por lo que dice esta canción. Sin embargo, antes en mi adolescencia dudo mucho si entendía siquiera lo que la canción decía siquiera. Pero bueno, ahora es cuando añoro dicha inocencia ya que la sensación de insensibilidad es algo que no lo recomiendo para nada. Luego de decepcionar a tantas personas debido a no haber cumplido con sus expectativas sobre mí, es difícil llegar a sentir algo genuino por alguien sin antes preocuparme.

We’ll wrap up this list with one of my favorite Linkin Park songs—the ultimate anthem for an entire generation, my generation. It’s a song that became popular in the early 2000s, long before “viral videos” existed and the internet was a common part of everyday life. "In The End" is one of those songs you can easily associate with an internet video clip, more specifically on YouTube, where you can see clips of epic battles from the famous anime Naruto with this song playing in the background. That’s what I used to watch a lot back then. While that was around 2010 and onward, “In The End” is one of the first singles from the American band’s debut album, Hybrid Theory (2000). Once again, we hear an unmistakable blend of what would become Nu Metal and Rap-Rock. What stands out most about this song is its spectacular composition, with that piano in the background at the beginning, the rap between the verses, and the unforgettable chorus featuring Chester Bennington’s iconic and incredible voice. The lyrics speak to the frustration a person feels when they see that all their efforts have been in vain. The song can have various meanings, such as the disappointment of a broken relationship due to betrayal or the personal frustration of watching time pass while the results don’t at all reflect all the effort you’ve put into something specific in your life. Lines like “time is a precious thing,” “watch it fly by like the swing of a pendulum,” “watch it count down to the end of the day,” and “watch time slip away out the window” are a pretty accurate way to describe what time is and its relentless presence in everyone’s life. Surely many of you have realized how much time you’ve dedicated to something in your lives, only to find that what you achieved in the end was never enough. The simple act of “watching time slip away out the window” is something that can torment someone because, no matter how hard you try at something, “in the end, it doesn’t even matter.” Since time and things don’t always turn out the way you imagine, nothing happens as you expect, and the outcomes of life are a complete mystery. That uncertainty is perfectly captured in this song, and that’s why I love it.

Finalizamos ahora esta lista con una de mis canciones favoritas de Linkin Park, el himno definitivo de toda una generación, mi generación. Una canción que se ha vuelto popular desde principios de los 2000, mucho antes de que existieran los “vídeos virales” y el internet fuera algo común en la sociedad. In The End es de esas canciones que fácilmente lo puedes relacionar con algún videoclip de internet, más en específico de YouTube donde se pueden ver recortes de batallas épicas del famoso anime Naruto con ésta canción de fondo. Esto era lo que solía ver mucho en aquel entonces. Si bien eso fue como a eso de los 2010 en adelante, In The End es uno de los primeros sencillos que forman parte del álbum debut de la banda estadounidense, Hybrid Theory (2000). De nuevo, podemos escuchar una mezcla inconfundible de lo que sería el Nü Metal con el Rap-Rock. De lo que más se puede destacar de esta canción es su espectacular composición, con ese piano de fondo al principio, el rap entre los estribillos y el inolvidable coro con la icónica e increíble voz de Chester Bennington. La letra habla de la frustración que una persona siente al ver que todos sus esfuerzos han sido en vano. De seguro a muchos les habrá pasado que se dan cuenta de todo el tiempo que le han dedicado a algo en sus vidas y que lo que consiguieron como resultado nunca llegó a ser suficiente. El simple hecho de “ver el tiempo irse por la ventana” es algo que puede llegar a atormentar a alguien debido al hecho de que, sin importar cuánto te esfuerces en algo, “al final, ni siquiera importa”. Ya que el tiempo y las cosas no siempre son como uno se imagina, nada sucede como uno espera y los resultados son todo un misterio en la vida. Dicha incertidumbre es descrita perfectamente en esta canción y por eso me encanta.
