Nafpaktos, built in a key position between Peloponnese and Sterea Hellas. Keeps a simultaneous control over the western gateway to the Corinthian bay. Its strategic position for the defense of Etolia and its role as an in-between station for the west Europeans to the Holy Land, promoted it to one of the most important medieval ports of Greece.

The first report comes from the historian Procopius who mention the city castle in the 6th century.
During the 8th and 9th centuries the city will suffer several Slavic raids.
Its was also one of the most important ports for the Byzantine fleet, an in – between station for the diplomatic contacts travels to the West, while in parallel was connected with Constantinople.

After 1204 goes under the control of the Venetians who mention Nafpakto as Lepanto.

With the treaty of 1210 it is ceded to Michael A' Angelos Dukas Comnenos. In 1294 Ducas offers Nafpaktos as a marriege portion to Philip A' for marrying with his daughter Thamar.
During the last decades of the 14th century Albanians, Venetians and Ottomans were fighting for its occupation. In 1407 gets under Venetian dominion and 1499 from Ottomanian.
Nafpaktos is set at liberty in 1829, incorporated to the newly established Greek State!
