¿Alguna vez has apostado?

Greetings friends of this beautiful community. This time I bring you a publication based on an experience of my personal life. I hope you can enjoy it.
Have you ever bet? Probably even unconsciously we have done it, and many people are so fascinated by this subject that they invent any method to be able to do it. And the fact is that by putting money as a succulent bait, many of us fall into that tentative emotion of being able to obtain a certain profit in a way that in the foreground always looks easy, but the truth is that we do not realize the reality until the damage appears.
When we talk about gambling, we mean exposing our money or something material to obtain a prize, in many cases more than what we are risking. Perhaps many of us do not remember the first time we bet on something, but it is difficult to forget when we win or lose in a big bet.
In my case, thinking back to when I first started betting takes me back to high school, where recess time became a real casino. Many played and bet on cards, chess, ludo or dominoes, while others played soccer, basketball or rubber ball, where the stakes were higher and even without playing you could participate.
Although by then it was already a good thing for soccer, there was a game that was the boom in high school and where people bet a lot called "Parecita", which was played by hitting a rubber ball against the wall while another one received the rebound, and it could be played one on one or in teams of two against two, being the winner the one who made the other one miss in five opportunities.
This game was a sure bet for me as I played as a team with another friend who was very good at it. Being in ninth grade we were the only ones playing against the fifth graders and that was a totally special thrill to be able to beat them with some ease. I remember that many of them paid us with breakfast from the canteen and some bread filled with chocolates that they sold near the school. Sometimes we had the nerve to play without money, betting only by word of mouth because we were confident that there was no way we could lose.
During my adolescence, I was more involved in sports, specifically futsala, and since every competition opens the door for betting, here was also the opportunity to do so. But in a different way, I won without having to expose my money, since others who had enough, bet on my team and then gave us part of the profit. Between triumphs and defeats I found bitter and sweet moments that marked that stage of my life.
Then I began to enter more fully into the world of betting, and I did it with a sport that since I was a child called my attention like horse racing. It is impressive how little you can win and how much you can lose and still be willing to play every weekend without failing. And then it is there where we expose ourselves to an addiction that can lead us to ruin very easily apart from losing something as valuable as time.
After some years between good and bad bets, I met a game called "parley" that basically deals with combined bets in order to guess the winners and get juicy winnings. I must admit that at the beginning I didn't understand much about how to play it, but after a few weeks I was able to win my first parley. It was very easy for me to adapt to this kind of lottery, although I must admit that for that I had to slave myself to analyze the plays and then following on the internet all the teams I had selected.
One of the things I thank myself for is that I never let myself get carried away by greed. I didn't play every day, and I didn't risk more than I assumed I could lose. I remember as a silly experience that there was a week when I played three times and won them, and I say it was silly because the third time I won, I asked a cousin to please go for me to collect, as it was a lot of money and I felt sorry with the girl who was a friend of mine and owner of that bank. How silly, right? As if they feel bad every time we lose.
But the gambling in my life would come to an end in an unthinkable way, and it all happened in the span of a week. At that time, I was working in a company from Monday to Saturday, so I only played a parley on Saturday or Sunday, and I also bet on the horses. There came a weekend where there was an important race, as they call it in the horse racing jargon, a classic, and something that always excited me was to bet on those types of races.
I spent several days analyzing the race, until an interview of a jockey who would participate in that classic gave me the confidence that he would be the winner. But there was a detail. That horse was not among the favorites and this meant a greater risk. Many family members and friends even made fun of me when I told them who I was betting on and they already thought my money was lost. Nevertheless, I kept my choice, and I remember that by that time I had available an amount that now would be about twenty dollars. My plan was to bet ten dollars on the horse and ten dollars on a parley.
At the time I had a girlfriend who lived in a neighboring city, specifically about an hour away. Turns out she made a surprise plan and asked me to visit her on Sunday, precisely the same day I had my bets ready. Now what could I do? Well, she wanted me to spend the whole morning with her in a park and at the mall, which required an early morning trip to her city.
Since I would be busy with her all morning, this would be no obstacle to my bets since the parley could be played anywhere and the horse race was at 4:30 in the afternoon, enough time for me to be back home. Everything seemed to work out perfectly. So I left very early in the morning to visit my girlfriend thinking that everything that day would go great.
I remember that to get to my destination I had to take four buses, and the truth is that at eight in the morning I was already in the park waiting for Mariel. I was waiting for three hours, and between messages and unanswered calls I didn't know why she never arrived at the time we agreed. Somewhat confused I had to go back, thinking about what had happened with her. But it wasn't until I was almost at my house, specifically at the terminal, when the phone rang: it was Mariel with a tone of annoyance because she thought I had left her on board. How did that happen?
It turns out that Mariel swore and perjured that the appointment time was at eleven o'clock, something she never stopped defending. But the worst thing was that, even crying, she asked me to come back, when I was almost at home. For a moment I did not know what to do, until I finally gave in to her request. Finally, when I was with her, I had to make her happy because, according to her, I was wrong about the time of the appointment. And so the afternoon went by and I still had time for the worst.
I must admit that being with my girlfriend I did not remember playing the parley and much less was I thinking about the race, I was really having a great time with her, until suddenly my phone rang: it was a cousin, who with great joy told me that the horse I had to play had won, yielding a profit of forty to one, that is, that for every dollar I was going to win forty. She did win and because she was so excited she called me to tell me. These are moments in life when you don't know whether to laugh or cry.
That day back home I couldn't stop thinking about the opportunity I had missed with a bet like that. I remember that same night I watched the replay of the race more than once, and I started to blame myself for not even leaving someone in charge to make the play for me. I felt like such a loser.
But the punch line was missing, and it came the next day when on my way to work, I bought a sports news paper to see more about the horse's victory, and checking the other games I realized that the parley combinations had also been given, five winning picks that I couldn't bet on either. All that was left was for Mariel to break up with me, something that didn't happen for a few months.
I was so frustrated and annoyed by everything, that from that moment on I never dared to bet again. It was a total collapse because I did not feel that I lost but that I stopped winning, and that is as cruel as it is different. Many years have passed since then, and I still continue to reproach myself for what I could not do.
Looking back, in my reflection I conclude that although things turned out as I least expected, the truth is that what happened helped me to stop betting and focus my time on more productive things. I understood that the best move is to bet on life and to share with those who will really value your time with them.
I once heard a phrase: "it's not a gamble if you know you're going to win". If you come to understand this phrase, you will understand that the best moves in life don't depend on guesswork or luck, but that life will always depend on how much better you do things and how sure you can be of it.
