Since I was little, I always tended to spend a lot of time surrounded by adults, and thanks to that, I not only felt the protection of my relatives, but I also benefited from the good example they all set in terms of habits and moral principles that are so important in life. As a result, I also developed a special taste for songs that didn't seem to fit my age because they were more in tune with their times, which helped me develop good judgment regarding the themes of movies and television shows that really taught me a lot. So I can say with complete certainty that, beyond having a childhood that was a little removed from the normal things of that stage of life, what I did receive was an education that always encouraged me to reason and think very carefully.

Because of this, it is not surprising that today my circle of friends is mostly made up of older people, including one who is now over 95 years old, more than twice what I have been able to experience so far. Many people often ask me how I manage to maintain a true and close friendship with them, and after thinking about it, I always come to the same conclusion: the way we communicate. It is impressive how easily I can strike up a conversation with them, delve into a topic, or listen to their valuable experiences with various episodes they have had to face in their lives.

For example, a couple of days ago we were talking about music and its generations, coming to the conclusion that songs are no longer written or performed as they used to be in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Many of my friends lived through the golden ages of many performers who are still very much alive today. In this case, I always tell them that they were lucky to be able to experience all this up close, and even to meet several singers personally. In the case of my friend Rafael (who is 95 years old), he even belonged to a Creole music group, playing a musical instrument for many years, something that, at least in my case, I would like to experience at least once in my life.

The truth is that I really enjoy talking and sharing with them about anything, noticing how everything flows quite naturally and even comfortably, you could say, since, especially in my case, I feel that when I try to talk to people my age or even a little younger, communication is not the same. It's as if you were talking about the same subject in several languages, and no matter how much you want to fit the ideas together, the result is not what you expected. Sometimes I prefer to go to an extreme that may not be the most appropriate, such as being alone, but I prefer to be calm rather than having to explain something that, no matter how obvious it may be, is not fully understood. The problem is not really us as people, but rather how our generations have led us to reason and see life from different perspectives conditioned by time and society itself.

And the following may not be a complaint, but rather a call to awareness of what we are currently doing with our lives. If we look back a few years, the amount of information and ways of staying informed were limited, while others required many sacrifices and efforts to benefit from them. The result? People with the ability to reason and know how to manage many aspects of life who, ironically, today seem to fail consistently. Compared to 30 or 40 years ago, it seems that we have all the information and tools we need to manage specific aspects of our lives, but the reality is quite different, far removed from the success we wish to achieve.

I know that today it is impossible to live in the same way that many people were able to in the past, but if there is one thing that remains within reach, it is the experience and knowledge of those who are still with us. Because it is not just about communication, but about how everything comes together when the pieces seem to fit together with ease, allowing you to get to know each other with the warmth and simplicity that makes any conversation a very special moment. It's not about fitting in because of your age or the virtues you think you have, but rather it's all based on the genuine interest we can develop for other people, who may be younger or older than us, but with the clarity and judgment needed to make this journey we all call life more bearable and even enjoyable.
