It’s not that hard for me to recall my first impression of the rain. I was still in kindergarten, and just before leaving the house, my mom bundled me up and told me we had to wait until it stopped raining. “Why can’t we get wet?” I think that’s what I was thinking—in the playful, childlike way typical of any kid who wants to play and have fun. However, the closest I came to that back then was looking out my bedroom window while sticking my arms through the bars to feel the raindrops fall. “When I’m a little older, then I’ll be able to enjoy the rain,” I might have thought at some point.
But the truth is that even when I was a little older, my mom still wouldn’t let me get wet in the rain. She told me it was dangerous and that I could get sick, but that didn’t convince me—especially when I saw other kids playing and running in the rain. It wasn’t until just before I started middle school that I finally got my mom’s permission to get wet in the rain. It was quite a spectacle—sometimes it lasted only a short while, while other times the rain became so heavy it was almost intimidating, especially when the thunder rolled constantly. Another factor was the time of day when it started raining; if it was too late, it was unlikely I’d be able to go outside. I think I always knew that at night, the rain is an opportunity to watch, listen, and meditate.
But it wasn’t all good news when it came to the rain, since for a while I actually wished it wouldn’t rain because of a specific situation: I was playing indoor soccer, and since the court wasn’t covered, the rain prevented us from playing. It could go almost the whole day without raining, but just a few hours before the tournament was set to start, it was as if the rain magically appeared. We couldn’t play that way because the court got really slippery, and no matter how hard we tried, the risk was just too great. As much as I loved playing, I’d rather not take the risk, and with genuine discomfort and annoyance, I had to stay home. I wasn’t that kid anymore who wished it would rain so he could go out and play.
At some point, this had to work out, and when I switched to soccer, things were completely different: practicing and playing in the rain is one of those things that still fills me with joy. It’s ironic that I used to hope it would rain during the game because it was rarely called off due to rain, unless it was a real storm. I remember one time when I had to go play in a pretty cold city, and just as we arrived, it was raining moderately—so much so that there was fog in several parts of the field. It was a night game, by the way, but beyond the victory, that game was unforgettable for me—not because of the goals, but because of the atmosphere we were able to experience. I even felt like I could run all night without needing a break.
Today, I’m no longer that little boy who longed for the rain, but my admiration for it remains intact, and I still often run, walk, and play in the rain. Sometimes at home, I like to listen to the raindrops echoing off the roof, to the wind sweeping the rain from one side to the other as if it were a musical theater production. I miss those moments when the whole day is practically shrouded in rain and you suddenly realize there isn’t much to do—when that can be the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a special, unique moment. Just as no two rainstorms are ever the same, so too is every moment of our lives—and yet we’re the ones who sometimes waste time wishing it would rain or not. How different it is when we realize that it’s not about whether it rains or not, but that we should always be at our best, no matter the circumstances.
