OK so I feel like suddenly mushrooms have been following me everywhere for about a month now. I have always been keenly interested in them (& I love eating them) so I'm not sure if they're becoming a mainstream, popular thing to be into, or if I'm just paying more attention to them now or what. But I'm ok with it as I do love them.
I whipped up this little doodle this weekend as I had mushrooms on my mind. They're not any specific species, just bright and happy. :)
I remember being a kid and loving mushrooms when everyone else hated them (olives, too!). My favourite lunch was a big bowl of Campbell's mushroom soup. I still indulge in it every now and then. As a grown-up, mushrooms are still a favourite, and as a vegetarian, I use them in my cooking a LOT.
Fast forward to high school- still a mushroom lover, and really enjoying the short segment we did about mycology in biology class. My mind was blown when we began discussing the mycelium and the fact that mushrooms are not just cute little growths that pop out of the ground- they have entire underground networks and are some of the largest organisms on Earth. Whaaaat? So cool!
This Novemeber/December a new Star Trek TV series came out (Discovery)... I've been watching all the different series since I was a kid, so call me a Trekkie but I was stoked to check out this new series. There it was- I don't want to do any spoilers but I'll say this- a big part of the show has to do with 'mycelium network!' AND one of the characters is named Stamets...
In December, @jkms suggested we check out this particular episode of the Joe Rogan Podcast because it featured an interview with this "crazy mushroom dude" and was super interesting! That would be of course famed mycologist Paul Stamets. I listened to the podcast and boy was it interesting! Stamets is a very engaging speaker and has a lot of knowledge and ideas that should be heard... I'm not saying that everything he says is 100% bang-on correct- let's all be mature critical thinkers, ok? But it was very interesting to say the least.
So there has been lots of mushroom talk in our household of late. When out on a hike yesterday, @mstafford and I made a point of keeping an eye out for mushrooms, something we hadn't really done before. Well it's amazing what you can find when you look! We saw a few little gems!
Lookit this cutie!
Does the red mean "danger!" ?
Our curiosity grew even more so we stopped by the book store today and picked up both Stamets' book and a little pocket field guide so we could try to identify some of the stuff we were seeing.... I am super interested to learn more about the various other edible mushroom species out there as I haven't ventured beyond the typical store-bought mainstays.
HOW MUCH DO YOU LOVE THAT COVER PHOTO LIKE WHO IS THIS DUDE?!?!
Have you also noticed mushrooms 'going mainstream' lately? What do you think? Are there any mycologists out there in Steem Land? If so, I would love to follow you!
Cheers!
