SHOULD PEOPLE FOLLOW THEIR PASSION OR FINANCIAL SECURITY
Markus Winkler
Passion is when people do something they are interested in. This passion does not happen immediately; it is built over time, and before you know it, the individual stays on that activity come rain or shine. This passion may be about job roles, careers, or business.
On the other hand, financial security is when someone is comfortable with their level of income and resources. Most importantly, that source of income is stable and guaranteed.
Once upon a time, we recruited a production manager through an internal referral system. During the assessment, it was clear to us that the individual was not suitable for the role; however, the referrer pleaded with the top management to give the person a chance. I also learned that the individual was a victim of redundancy from a previous workplace and needed a well paying job to maintain status and family needs. We listened and gave the individual the role, however, there were clauses attached in the offer of employment to assist us checkmate incompetencies and poor performance.
A few weeks after onboarding, the real struggle started; at meetings, the individual was not able to give reports and present convincing production analysis. Management stopped his attendance at the meetings. I met the individual, and after evaluating the performance, I advised a redeployment to the administrative department, which suits the profile, though the job role pays less than the previous function. The individual refused, and before I could offer other suggestions, I got a resignation letter from the person. So, we closed the page.
On the other hand, I have recruited a janitor who has a passion for procurement; the janitor was sponsored after some years of working with us, and today, he is the warehouse manager. For me, financial security is fine, but it will be much better for individuals to work towards their passion and grow their finances through that route.

I have a passion for assisting and supporting others to win. However, I graduated as a marketing student and launched my career as a customer service representative and telemarketer. However, I switched careers as I made progress, not just because of financial security, but mainly because I needed to follow my passion. What drives me to wake up is supporting people, so I had to switch careers to fulfil that passion.
In conclusion, finding a balance between passion and financial security will be the ultimate guide to a successful life. Doing a job I do not have passion for and struggling in that job may lead to public shame and redundancy, while also doing a job that does not give me the financial leverage to meet my daily needs will cause frustration and stress. So, I will start with a job that I am passionate about and grow into bigger roles that will give me that financial security.
