Do you remember, when in the early 1960's, there was a rush of all these British Bands, coming to America and taking us by storm? These bands introduced a whole new, refreshing type of music that teens all over the country went crazy over. I call this phase, “The British are coming, the British are coming.”
For me, it all started with the Beatles, when they released their first song in the U.S., with the single, “Please Please Me.” Beatlemania was all over England by then and growing each day. Eventually, the Beatles came to America on February 9, 1964 and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. They were such a surprising hit, that after that appearance, America’s doors were swung wide open to an influx of British bands and singers.
Do you remember the Rolling Stones, the Dave Clark Five, Chad and Jeremy, Herman’s Hermits, The Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Hollies, Peter and Gordon, The Yardbirds, The Moody Blues, Manfred Mann, The Kinks, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Donovan, etc.? I know I left a lot of groups and singers out, but there are too many.
If you were a teen during the early 60's, I'm sure you know at least a few of these British Bands or singers. How about some of these songs? She Loves You, She’s Not There, For Your Love, I’m Into Something Good, Downtown, Glad All Over, Can’t Buy Me Love, I’m Telling You Now, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, I’m Henry VIII, Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter, Satisfaction, The House of the Rising Sun, Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying, Wishin’ and Hopin’, A World Without Love, and A Hard Day’s Night.
Finally do you remember the influence the British invasion had on us? Rememeber the mop top hairdos, the Nehru jackets, Twiggy, Yardley make-up, mini skirts, white boots, Mod fashion, etc.?
So, the British Invasion of the 60's, had a good influence on America. The Music world was able to broaden its styles and genres, girls could go to concerts to scream & faint, everyone wanted and got a Nehu jacket to wear, females made a mad dash to buy Yardley products, Mod fashion became the in fashion of the time with its geometric patterns and girls couldn't wait to wear their calf high white boots. Those were such wonderful times and England was all the rage.
Even now, I still enjoy my oldies music and fondly remember all those wonderful times in the 60’s. Thank goodness the British invaded America or we would not have all of the above!
