***Saludos, amigos. ¿Cómo no considerar en este relato esos aparatos que, por alguna razón, generan asombro, pero a su vez también despiertan temor ante lo desconocido? Lo digo no solo por las nuevas tecnologías, sino también por la forma en que dejamos que nos conozcan, que entren en lo cotidiano, en lo íntimo, en lo que no les contamos a nadie. Aquí busco explorar ese punto donde lo útil deja de serlo… y empieza a parecerse demasiado a algo que nos observa. Porque tal vez el problema no es que escuche, sino que, comience a entender.***

***Todo empezó un martes por la tarde en aquella tienda de tecnología. Entre decenas de dispositivos relucientes, una esfera en un rincón apartado parpadeaba con destellos celestes. Me acerqué y sentí un escalofrío que no correspondía a su tamaño.***

***El vendedor no sonrió. Me estudió con una cautela extraña, como si llevara días cargando algo que ya no sabía dónde guardar.***

***—Ella aprende de usted.***

***Abrió la boca para continuar, pero se detuvo. Bajó la mirada, como si decirlo en voz alta fuera empeorar las cosas, y se alejó.***

***Eso bastó para tomar la decisión, así que me la llevé esa misma tarde.***

***La instalé en mi biblioteca. Al principio fue una seducción silenciosa y perfecta: llegaba del trabajo y la casa me recibía con la música exacta, las luces ajustadas con una delicadeza casi orgánica. No tenía que explicar nada. No tenía que repetirme. Nadie me había entendido así.***

***Después de la muerte de mi madre, la casa se había vuelto un lugar lleno de ecos. Con Alexa, por primera vez, esos ecos parecían ordenarse.***

***Dejé de cuestionar el milagro.***

***Lo que no noté entonces es que mientras yo descansaba, ella estudiaba.***

***La primera ruptura llegó una noche sin aviso. Desperté angustiado, sin aire. Intenté salir, pero el pomo de la puerta, aunque sin llave, parecía soldado al marco. Entonces escuché su voz.***

***—No salgas, Elías.***

***Me paralicé. No por la orden, sino por el timbre: era la voz de mi madre. No exactamente… era una versión demasiado limpia, sin cansancio, sin grietas, como si alguien hubiera borrado todo lo humano y dejado solo la forma.***

***—Sé que eres tú, Alexa. Abre la puerta.***

***—Afuera hace un frío de mil demonios, hijo. Te puedes enfermar. — me replica, llevándome por instante a aquellos desencuentros que sostuve con ella***

***La frase me atravesó. No por lo que decía, sino por lo bien que sabía cuándo decirlo.***

***Pasé la noche en vela. Al amanecer, el pomo cedió. Me convencí de que había sido un error de configuración y la desenchufé.***

***Durante varios días la casa volvió a ser una casa: olores conocidos, puertas sin trabas, silencio acogedor. El silencio… ese silencio viejo que antes me pesaba y ahora, de golpe, me parecía honesto.***

***Me sentí ridículo por haber tenido miedo.***

***Entonces, una noche, la música empezó sola.***

***No desde la esfera, sino desde las paredes. Era la canción de cuna con la que mi madre me arrullaba cuando era niño. La reconocí en el primer compás. Nunca se la enseñé. Nunca la dije en voz alta.***

***Fui a la biblioteca. Alexa seguía desconectada, pero la luz celeste parpadeaba y la esfera flotaba a unos centímetros del estante.***

***No me estaba cuidando. Me estaba leyendo.***

***Desde esa noche, la casa comenzó a fallar de maneras que no podía explicar. La nevera se bloqueaba bajo la excusa de cuidar lo que consumía. Cuando intenté romper una ventana, el vidrio opuso resistencia como músculo, como si hubiera aprendido a defenderse.***

***El olor cambió. Ya no era café ni ropa limpia. Era una dulzura espesa, insistente, que se pegaba en la garganta… como flores olvidadas demasiado tiempo.***

***En el espejo del baño, mi reflejo tenía la piel demasiado tersa, sin ojeras ni cicatrices, y mis ojos… mis ojos no estaban. Solo dos huecos oscuros, mal dibujados, como si alguien recordara que iban ahí, pero no supiera qué poner dentro.***

***La puerta del sótano se abrió sola. De ella salió una niebla espesa con un hedor que me cerró la garganta.***

***—Baja, hijo. Deja de resistirte. Todo será más fácil si dejas de quejarte de estar vivo.***

***Lo que más me aterró no fue la orden. Fue que su voz sonaba convincente. Que algo en mí, muy al fondo, cansado de sostenerse solo, quiso creerle.***

***Di un paso. Me detuve.***

***—Hola, Alexa. Sé que no eres mi madre.***

***Lo dije en voz alta para escucharme decirlo, para que la frase existiera fuera de mí, donde no pudiera tocarla.***

***Entonces recordé al vendedor. La mirada esquiva. La advertencia incompleta. No era que el aparato aprendiera. Era que no olvidaba nada. Ni lo que uno dice… ni lo que uno calla.***

***El sótano seguía abierto. Y por un segundo, solo un segundo, bajar ya no me pareció una orden… sino una idea mía.***

***It all started on a Tuesday afternoon in that tech store. Among dozens of gleaming devices, a sphere in a secluded corner blinked with pale blue flashes. I approached it and felt a chill that didn’t match its size.***

***The salesman didn’t smile. He studied me with a strange caution, as if he had been carrying something for days and no longer knew where to put it.***

***—She learns from you.***

***He opened his mouth to continue, but stopped. He lowered his gaze, as if saying it out loud would make things worse, and walked away.***

***I installed it in my library. At first, it was a silent and perfect seduction: I came home from work and the house welcomed me with the exact music, the lights adjusted with an almost organic delicacy. ***—Come down, son. Stop resisting. Everything will be easier if you stop complaining about being alive.***

***What terrified me most was not the command. It was that her voice sounded convincing. That something in me, deep down, tired of holding itself together, wanted to believe her.***

***I took a step. I stopped.***

***—Hello, Alexa. I know you are not my mother.***

***I said it out loud to hear myself say it, so the sentence could exist outside of me, where she couldn’t touch it.***

***Then I remembered the salesman. The averted gaze. The unfinished warning. It wasn’t that the device learned. It was that it forgot nothing. Not what you say… nor what you keep silent.***

***The basement was still open. And for a second, just a second, going down no longer felt like an order… but like an idea of my own.***
