During my pregnancy with my boy, he was healthy, and the day he was born it was a different story.
During my pregnancy as we all do, I visit the gynecologist as I was supposed too. On all the pictures we received from the doctor there was no sign of what I was going to be introduced to, once my first-born made his appearance into the world.
During my pregnancy we went to the doctor he checked everything and my baby was doing perfectly fine. Hubby and me were so excited because the pregnancy went very well.
So, Doctor came and said we will have a normal delivery today. I was so excited because this was how I was planning to do it. But my son and my body decided this is not possible. The Doctor informed us that we have to do an emergency C-section.
On the morning of 6 February I went into labor and he was borne. And I heard the doctor saying this is a BIG BOY, as the nurse took him I heard everyone talking about his feet but at this time I could not see what was going on because the Two nurses was cleaning him up, finally I got a small glimpse and I saw his blue feet that did not appear normal. The nurse was rubbing them attempting to make the feet straight. I was so sad and crying my heart out, the Doctor told me, no need to worry; this is not a big deal because many babies are born like this and it can be fixed.
All the time I was thinking on how he will be able to have a normal life and could not get my head around it.
After we settled down we went to see a Doctor that specializes in these types of issues. He was only six day’s old when the Doctor placed both his legs in casts from his thighs down, only his toes were sticking out. The casts were put on because the Doctor slowly started to position the feet in the normal posture. We had to drive to Pretoria once a week to replace and re-positioning the casting.
At 3 months of age he got his first operation on both his feet, this was heart breaking and I had a bad time getting over it. But, my boy was just fine; he had some pain for the first few days and then he was fine, and did not really show any discomfort.
He went back for the second surgery when he turned 1 and he started to almost walk with the casts, this was so amazing and inspiring.
Today he is 8 years old and if you did not know about his feet you will not even notice it.
The lesson I learned was that kids are much more stronger and tougher than we think and when something seems like a very big issue or problem in the end it is not as bad as we make it.
