Sometimes I wonder how badly we all want to grow up, only to grow up and start missing the life we once had.
One of the stages is when we are still babies and growing. No worries, no responsibilities, no work. All we do is eat, play, sleep and cry. As we grow older, we enjoy more of the benefits of having parents. We get angry and refuse to eat, and they either beg or flog us to eat.
I still miss those days when my mum was the one doing my laundry. I was not happy when she stopped and asked me to take over washing my own school uniform. Then I was also given a job in the house, washing plates, which annoyed me even more. But then, I was still living rent-free. There were worries, but they were just house-chore worries and how to evade them.
The time seemed to move so slowly, and I always wished time could run faster so that I could be done with secondary school education. I craved freedom away from my parents, but when the time came and I got that freedom to do as I liked, I no longer craved the things I wished to do when I was still living with them.
I realized what they were protecting me from, and I also became wise enough to know that they were right to stop me from doing those things.
Adulthood came, and independence became a must. I had to work and survive on my own without relying on my parents. It was not that bad, and at some point, I was enjoying my best life without knowing what the future held.
Then fatherhood came.
Most people often miss the life they had before fatherhood because their responsibilities were less. They didn’t need to protect anyone. That was the time they could really take good care of themselves, buy the latest clothes, phones and enjoy their lives.

But fatherhood changes a lot of things because now you have people you need to prioritize above yourself.
It becomes even tougher when you don’t have enough money and you have to think twice before getting something for yourself because your wife and child need something too. This is why some fathers never buy anything for themselves again once they are married.
Fatherhood comes with a lot of sacrifice, but guess what? It is also sweet and lovely when you are with the right partner. All the sacrifice won’t matter when you see your family looking nice and happy.
Then old age comes.
You have a family, maybe money too, but you don’t have the strength to enjoy life anymore. If life favours you, your family will stand behind you, supporting, loving and caring for you until you die.
But some people are not that lucky and end up being abandoned.
So, while growing, make sure you have a plan for your old age.
