When Has It Gone "Too Far"?

In my previous post about restoring Pokémon cards, I showcased one of my recent test subjects. The improvement was considerable, but I ran into diminishing returns just using mechanical tools, humidity and then heat pressing the card.

The card started like this, with creases I deliberately introduced by nearly bending the card in half.

The end product, and where I hit a wall when it came to progress, looked like this.

Not bad, right? Except I wanted the creases gone. So, I started experimenting with using a thermal pen to introduce localized heat and pressure to essentially "iron out" the creases. The downside to this is that after repeated attempts it removes the thin, glossy polymer coating on the back of the card where you've repeatedly used the pen. It's certainly not ideal.

Some who want a binder copy may not care, but for me it's the principle. I want to restore the card as close to how it looked before I creased it. I tried applying a card polish, but because it has an oil base to it, the oil seeped through the back and caused a stain. I threw the card out.

After doing some research, I may be able to use a water-based polymer polish that will work to restore the gloss. It's absolutely dishonest if you're planning to sell the card or grade it, but for my personal binder copy I don't care. The question is, even if I'm successful with this method, have I taken things "too far"?
