Happy Friday, Shadow Hunters community! It has been quite a long week. Just this past Wednesday—almost at the last minute—I shared my entry for the previous round of the SMASH contest, and now, this Friday afternoon, I’m sharing my entry for round #449. My work at the two universities where I’m currently fully occupied has left me very little time to plan dedicated "shadow-hunting" outings. I’m realizing now that I’ll have to improvise as I go, capturing shadows during my day-to-day activities. I finished my weekly classes yesterday, and early today, I had to pick up some groceries that had run out in my pantry. Looking out the window, I saw bright, radiant sunshine and a clear sky, so along with my wallet, I grabbed my phone to capture some shadows during my shopping trip.

I started by picking up some coffee, cocoa, and sliced bread at a convenience store (similar to an OXXO). I usually travel quite a distance to buy these items because the quality near my home is very poor; however, the upside is that I occasionally come across spots like this bus stop, where the afternoon sun creates some truly interesting shadows. Afterward, I headed to the market for produce and deli items—buying some cheese, ham, Polish sausages, and tomatoes—to make skewers, or what are also known as Spanish tapas. As I was leaving, I spotted another shadow, cast by a shrub near the area where some of the vendors set up their stalls to sell vegetables and seek shelter from the sun, which can be quite exhausting at this time of day.

I decided to buy some plantains and a few local limes to make lemonade to go with my lunch. I then headed east to pick up some special pasta sheets for pasticho—the Venezuelan take on lasagna. The last time I made one, I didn’t have enough pasta, and I wasn’t about to let that happen again. On my way back, just as I was about to catch some transport to head home, I spotted the magnificent shadow cast by an arepa and empanada stall. Dealing with the sun at this time of day is quite a challenge, so many street vendors—like this one—set up a large umbrella that throws a generous patch of shade across the sidewalk. It might not look like it, but these stalls attract a large number of customers, especially in the early morning; by the afternoon, however, business tends to slow down. The vendors were already getting ready to pack up and leave, so I took the opportunity to capture the shadow cast by the arepa stall. Further off, you can see the large elevated roadway that runs north-to-south; beneath it lies a little microcosm of book sellers, antique dealers, and even chess players. The shade provided by the overpass makes it an ideal spot to browse the various items on display. I lingered there for a while, hoping to find an interesting book, but nothing caught my eye, and it was time for me to go. Even so, I left feeling content—I had managed to capture a few striking shadows, a glimpse of an ordinary day in the city of Caracas as seen through its shadows.
