Breaking free from melancholy with a reunion with my tutor and celebrating my brother's birthday! [Eng/Esp]

Happy Sunday, Family & friends community! These last two weeks have been truly difficult for me, well, actually for everyone living in Venezuela, after the double earthquake that struck the central coastal mountain range. The damage was extensive, and the death toll is approaching 4,500. Even more tragic is that so far, 30,000 people are still missing, most of them buried in the rubble. I started working at the collection centers at the university where I teach, but last week I received the worst possible news: one of my best students, who had been missing for over a week, was found dead in the rubble of her apartment. This news completely devastated me, and I spent the entire week without leaving the house. I felt so depressed that I didn't even feel like eating. The fact that one of my students, with her whole life ahead of her to build and secure a future for her family, had her life cut short in this way saddened me so much that it took away my appetite.
So I spent these days locked up at home, trying to get through this ordeal, writing and reading posts on Hive. Then I realized that this Saturday we were going to celebrate my brother's birthday, and my mother and I decided to take advantage of this moment to go out and clear my head a little of these sad thoughts that weighed on my heart. We decided to go to the east side of Caracas to buy a birthday cake. This bakery and pastry shop is one of the most famous in this part of the city, and its cakes are among the most sought-after, so I didn't hesitate to get my brother a good birthday cake.
We ended up arriving after noon and they didn't have any cakes available. What seemed like a quick trip to buy a cake and go home turned into a nearly hour-long wait for new cakes to come out of the oven. But it wasn't a bad thing because while we were waiting, my tutor texted me saying she was nearby and that we should wait for her so we could have coffee and some dessert.
My tutor arrived just as they had the cake ready. They gave it to us in its box, ready to go, so we sat down at one of the tables to wait for coffee and a couple of croissants: one cream cheese and one chocolate-filled. And there you have it, these women are the two fundamental pillars of my life. Everything I am as a man and as a professional I owe to them, and seeing them together lifted my spirits. We hadn't seen each other since the day before the earthquake because we were both teaching the biophysics and cell dynamics lab sessions. We took advantage of this moment to catch up over coffee.
I won't lie, friends, I needed this outing, and running into my tutor and talking with her was a real relief. I think she felt the same way because we both lost students in this tragedy, and others were left homeless. So, we organized ourselves to try and offer these students temporary shelter while we worked to improve their situation. After coffee, I enjoyed the chocolate croissant that really lifted my spirits. I used to think that dessert was literally therapeutic! After this brief meeting, I said goodbye to my tutor, wishing her all the best and telling her to try to rest since academic activities were completely suspended until after August.
We headed towards the center, to get home and put out the cake, the cheese and the gifts before my brother arrived from his work, but first we took a shortcut to buy my brother the special gift.
We arrived home at 5 pm, and the sun was already starting to set. Interestingly, a beautiful twilight appeared, and shortly after, my brother arrived, just in time for us to put everything on the table, from the brownie cake covered in chocolate to the flan, which my mother had made and looked delicious!
I gave my brother his gift: a bottle of Santa Teresa triple-aged rum, his favorite. We poured some shots of it and toasted to his birthday, to being together, and to good health. We sang "Happy Birthday" and cut into the cake and flan, both delicious. My mother looked happy, and especially my brother, since these past two weeks have been very difficult for him. He's a photojournalist and had to go down to La Guaira state, the epicenter of the disaster where the greatest destruction and number of victims occurred. So, in short, it was a moment to cheer us up, overcome the sadness of this difficult time, and move forward.
Well friends, I'm signing off with this beautiful sunset I captured after celebrating my brother's birthday. Experiencing this moment has undoubtedly given me the strength to recover. I think this is a feeling that the country is collectively experiencing: the need to overcome pain, get back on my feet, and move forward, helping those close to us who have suffered or lost everything. Sharing these moments with you has also been a way to shake off this melancholy and enjoy life with my family. I hope you've enjoyed these words and the photos. See you in the next post. Best regards!

Saludos!
