If you could live on only one food for the rest of your life ....think about that for a minute.... only one food
F.O.R.E.V.E.R.
What would it be?
Me? I'd choose a superfood. Without doubt.
Avocado. Cacao. Or. Honey. Yum...Honey. Which, considering my life; is quite apt. Buzzy. Buzzy. Never stopping. Constantly moving. On the go. Working here. Working there. Buzzy. Buzzy. Children. Gardens. Goats. Fermenting. Foraging. Children. Housecleaning. Seedlings. Soap. Children. Goats. Garden. Chickens. Kitchen. Children. Buzzy. Buzzy.

Summer. Winter. Sickness. Health. Feast. Famine. Drought. Flood. Life in the garden - life on the homestead - is never done. And homesteading never takes a holiday. A bee epitomizes that. But the result is the sweetest, most life sustaining superfood. Honey! And now that summer is here, it is time to harvest that liquid gold.

Bees intrigue me. Bees also inspire me. How many people do you know who will sacrifice their lives - in living and in dying - for others? And their constant business between the blossoms always sounds so happy.

Throughout winter we watched the foraging little honey bees on the striking aloes. With the arrival of spring they're among the blossoming fruit trees and herbs. We work hard on the homestead. Very. VERY hard. And I have to admit. It isn't always joyous. But those little bees. They never cease to tire. And their buzzy buzzy always sounds so happy.

My gardening currently is focused - rather, still focused - on cleaning and preparing. While I chop aloe ferox into the drinking water of goats and chickens I also forage for my soap making. Aloe and honey goats milk soap is sublime. Just like honey drizzled over goats milk yoghurt. Yum!!

The wonderful honey is an integral part of our home life. Either in soap or baking or kombucha. This season, thanks to riverflows@riverflows - oyxymel bliss will be another superfood essential. To inspire you other hardworking gardeners out there listen to the buzzing bees this October as you work on your weeds and seeds and Garden Journalling.

And so as temperatures rise and workloads increase, I sweat in the dirt among the thorns listening to the cheerful buzzing of the bees. These remarkable little insects are such an integral part of our survival. They deserve far more love and respect. Today, in the heat, bent over the weeds I am joyful.
