We do. And with a little effort, you can too.

Our dog, Candy, is extremely picky when it comes to food, even table food, but one thing she never refuses is pure meat. We prefer to purchase beef liver and heart from the supermarket instead of packaged dog treats with a long list of ingredients that we cannot pronounce. You might be surprised to learn that the price per pound of some popular soft dog treats can run from 15-20 dollars or more.

After trimming any fat, which does not dry well, we slice the heart, in this case, into bite size pieces. We do the same for liver but you could also use kidney or any other cut of raw meat.

The pieces go into the dehydrator at its highest setting. In 15 hours or so, the heart is dry and ready to go into the refrigerator or freezer for longer storage.

Candy is one finicky eater, but as you can see, she doesn't hesitate when offered her favorite treat.

That's contentment....a warm comfy couch and a full belly.
