The highest treason a crab can commit, is to make a leap for the rim of the bucket.
-Steven Pressfield

If you've never heard of the Crab Bucket Mentality, then to summarize: If you put a single crab inside a bucket without a lid, the crab will likely escape. Put two or more crabs in the same bucket with no lid, and none will escape because as soon as one crab attempts to climb out, the other(s) will pull it back down.

My Take: While Human beings aren't always quite so short-sighted, we can just as easily fall into this trap in many areas of our life. Jealousy, spite or even just the fear of being left behind are reasons we might subconsciously try to sabotage the success of others, even though we would be furious if someone else was sabotaging our efforts to succeed.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs shows how desperate people can do desperate things.

When there are a cluster of people stuck at the bottom, instead of helping each other to rise up in unison, they tend to pull each other down. The thought or idea may offend some, but communities that suffer from extreme poverty have this behavior in spades. Gangs and violence often are a way of life for street kids who live in poverty. When there isn't enough for everyone to survive, our instinct is to keep others from gaining too much ground, and to secure enough for ourselves. We become selfish and angry, Jealous and resentful at those who have more than us. At least, that is our instinct.

As time progresses and the world becomes less disjointed, maybe we will learn to lift others up, instead of trying to climb out first; because in the end were are all in this life together, and those who can do more are obligated to do more to help humanity, not to squander their advantage on themselves.
