I get what you are saying and I agree the state shouldn't be involved in marriage. I'm not really sure at what point they became entangled in it. I guess because the state was having to take on the burden of failed partnership and children of single parents.

Some of it seems almost impossible to enforce / too restrictive in our modern society like "Unmarried young women are not allowed to be unchaperoned."

To really expect a 20 year old college girl to be chaperoned around is sort of laughable. Or women who are traveling around the world these days which wasn't necessarily possible in the same capacity even 50 years ago.
