Marriage is a community thing.

The state should never have been involved in marriage.

So, the community should support people getting married.
Men do not hit on married women.
Married women do not flirt with others.
Unmarried, young women are not promiscuous.
Unmarried young women are not allowed to be unchaperoned.

This is important for the community, because the community has to support all the children. (and all the women)
And, so the community enforces all of these things.

The state doesn't enforce any of these, in fact, they seem to reward them.
And without them, marriage is a losing proposition.

Today it is downright life threatening.
