My son and I were recently taking a hike in a desert area and came across an old TV that someone had littered and dumped in the desert. It wasn’t too far from the road, so we decided to pack it out and dispose of it.
Naturally, we decided to dismantle it a little bit and take a look inside (what 5 year old boy doesn’t want to do that?!). After looking at the different components we noted some copper wiring so we yanked it out – a different kind of prospecting!
We put it on the scale and the copper weight came in at 3.87 grams:
Let’s do the math on the value! Copper’s spot price is currently about $2.43 per pound. With 16 ounces in a pound, and 28.5 grams in a once, the value of our copper is…. $0.02 US dollars! ($2.43/16 x 3.87/28.5).
Ok, so a measly 2 cents, but the memory was priceless! Maybe I can melt it down into a tiny .999 fine ingot and sell it for double that...
