SpaceX’s High-Stakes Space Gamble: Race against Time and High Interest Rates
The bets have been placed and the goal is clear: it's off to space with the new data centers. 40 billion dollars have already been ordered from Nvidia to make this bet in space a reality. In general, there is nothing to be said against this project, because space is cold and sunshine hours there are almost unlimited.
However, one problem is that Elon Musk wants to borrow the money on the financial market for the chips from Nvidia. Of course, this fits perfectly into the circular financing across the entire tech bubble, where one company buys revenue from the next and all of it on credit.
The credit costs are the real problem, as interest rates of around 11% are being demanded for these 40 billion dollars. So if these space data centers cannot be realized for any reason or arrive late, it will get really expensive.
The invisible hand of the market is keeping the NASDAQ alive, even though the majority of all stocks are not celebrating new all-time highs, but rather reaching new lows. To keep the NASDAQ in a good mood, a sector rotation might soon be necessary again, because if the risks become too great, the big tech players could enter a correction. The smaller companies would then be bought up and rise again while the big ones correct—allowing the NASDAQ to keep the party going. Of course, this bet only pays off if the risk among the mega-caps isn't too high and the sums involved aren't too absurd.
Even in the physical world, there are growing protests and, above all, lawsuits against data centers. If things continue like this, the first data centers might well be dismantled by protesters themselves. It is therefore quite sensible to banish such buzzkills into the vastness of the universe, but will this bet pay off—especially now that time is playing an increasingly crucial role?
