With the passing of the all-star game, we are halfway through another Summer of baseball. Once again controversy has erupted over safety concerns along the foul line. It seems like more and more we are hearing about someone getting smacked in the face or head by an errant ball. The MLB has added safety netting along the foul line, but some people think it needs to be extended even further into right field and left field to protect the fans.
Here are some of the biggest arguments for not extending the netting:
It will hinder the fans view of the action that is taking place on the field
It will not allow fans to "catch" balls to keep as souvenirs, etc.
Player fan interaction will be decreased
I can understand the "heart" of these arguments, but I honestly don't think anyone wants to keep seeing kids get fractured skulls from being hit in the face by a foul ball.
Sure, you are going to get those people who say it's because people are too busy looking at their phones and not paying attention to the game. I think that might be true 60% of the time, but to me that other 40% makes it more than worth it.
My nieces play softball and I have been hit by an errant pitch from my oldest niece. It hurt! That's before it had extra momentum added to it by being hit with a bat... I heard a story the other day about a NASA rocket scientist or physicist who wrote a whole book/paper about why so many balls are being hit out of the park these days.
Apparently, (and I know it sounds funny), but balls are more round now than they have ever been in the past. This allows them to fly farther and faster than they have in the past. A line drive can cover distances much faster than it could in the past and that fraction of a second could be the difference between you seeing it coming and not.
