A couple of weeks ago 
The town of Dublin, Ohio is a suburb on the north west corner of Columbus and it's safe to say it is growing quite rapidly. In just the past decade we have seen a huge amount of development along the Scioto River and in some of the surrounding areas.
Even the historic downtown area of Dublin has seen a huge amount of development and growth in the past few years. Thankfully, there are organizations like the Dublin Historical Society that are dedicated to preserving the past and history of the town.
Through their connections in the community, my inlaws learned that you can rent out the historical society building for small gatherings at a pretty reasonable price. I think it was something like $50 per hour or somewhere around there.
The gathering area of the building is quite small able to hold maybe fifty people safely, but there are other areas of the building that house the historic items the society is dedicated to preserving.
As we were waiting for guests to arrive at the party, I took the opportunity to walk through the bottom level of the museum and take some pictures to share with you.
Across the street from the historical society is an old building that was recently purchased and is being renovated to become a wine and bourbon tasting room. As they were doing the renovations, they discovered a large number of bottles beneath the floorboards. They have them on display here in the museum.
They also found this old wallet in while they were doing the construction work as well. They were able to track down the owner of the wallet based on the contents, but unfortunately, she had just passed away shortly before they were able to connect with her. How sad is that? If you look really closely, you will notice to the right of the wallet they also found some old shotgun shells in the building. Interesting!
For such a small space, they actually had a lot of information and artifacts. It was pretty cool to walk through. I actually wish I would have had more time to stop and read all of the displays. I knew I had to move quickly to get back to the party, so I didn't want to linger too long.
The area where Columbus and its suburbs are now located used to be a very active settlement for the Native American tribes. As such, there are a lot of Native American names attributed to places in the surrounding area like Olentangy, Shawnee Hills, and various other ones. As you might expect, they found a large number of Native American artifacts in the area as well as you can see above.
I wasn't thinking at the time, but I should have looked to see if they had any precious metal artifacts that they had discovered.
I didn't really realize until after the fact, but I think there is a whole second level of the museum that I didn't even bother to explore. I might have to go back one day and visit just for completeness sake! I can't help but wonder what the past residents of Dublin would think if they could see what the town has become now.
Actually, near where my inlaws live is an older lady who has lived in or near Dublin all her life. I bet she has some pretty amazing stories to tell. There is a massive stretch of farmland that her family owns near a pretty big commercial area. It's going to be sad when those areas are finally handed over to the corporations. It's kind of inevitable at this point I think.
If you are ever down in the Columbus area, I highly recommend you spend some time in the suburb of Dublin. It's a pretty cool place with a rich history.
