How many of your remember this DApp from the days before Hive was Hive? I used it occasionally back then, I can't say I was very consistent about it for a variety of reasons. Some of you probably know this, but Appics is actually still around. In fact, I know there is at least one person in the Leo community that has an account for sure.
For me, Appics has a bit of a troubled past. It definitely wasn't a smooth ride from where they were to where they are now. Back in the day (literally only about two to three years ago), there was an even larger valley between the long form content creators and the short form ones than there is today.
Appics came on the scene to give users on the blockchain an Instagram-like feel. It's smart when you think about it. It takes quite a bit to be an Instagram influencer. However, there are a ton of people in the world with really awesome photos on their phones that could start earning something through Appics. Sounds pretty awesome right?
Awesome until you do your first post with just a picture and a sentence (standard Insta format right?) and someone nukes your account to oblivion because they think your post was low quality or low effort.
For some reason, when Hive forked, Appics made the decision to stay with Steem. Perhaps it was because they had the foresight to know the quality of content was going to go down the tubes and they figured people would be too busy to mess with their stuff.
Maybe it was the fact that they already planned on moving to a different chain anyway and they were just biding their time.
I joined the Appics Telegram channel quite some time ago. I would pop in every now and then and simply say "Wen TELOS?" and I would be met with crickets. I even created an account over on the TELOS chain and bought some of the TELOS tokens in preparation. TELOS was set to be the new home for Appics, but the move proved to be painfully slow. So much so that I basically gave up on the DApp. Many people did not.
Now, Appics is close if not totally moved over to the TELOS blockchain and the people who stuck it out definitely have a distinct advantage over those of us who did not. I have zero of the Appics tokens so I can't upvote anyone. I can't find an easy way to buy some of them, and since I don't really have a following, I am getting basically nothing in upvotes.
It brings me back to my early days of Hive, not wanting to waste my good content and get no votes, but realizing I need to post good content to bring in those eyes.
So yeah, Appics is out there, still kicking around. I am on it. I know for a fact that 
I actually really like the Appics app. The developers have obviously put a lot of work into it and I can see it as a place that I would like to spend more time. It gets me thinking though...
Was it just ahead of its time here on Hive (Steem)? As I said, people are certainly more open to short form content now, but there still seems to be a bit of a stigma towards it on this blockchain. I even find myself relying on some of those biases sometimes. I've found I am much less likely to read or upvote something that was posted via DBuzz. Is that fair, no, but it has been so ingrained in me that short form content = low quality, low effort.
There is a new front end for Hive that is very similar to Appics. I can't remember the name of it now, but I am sure someone else will point it out in the comments. I think my biggest problem with that one is the lack of an mobile app.
Appics has that and believe me when I say it is game changing. I know many people in the world don't have desktop or laptop machines so doing everything on their phone is probably second nature. For those of us who do (or maybe just those of us who are getting old), doing certain things on your phone is just miserable. Even more so if there isn't a dedicated app. You can make your site as responsive as all get out, but some things just don't work well in a mobile browser.
I'm sorry, that's my truth.
If it wasn't for Ecency, I likey would never do anything Hive related on my phone. Splinterlands in a mobile browser... I tried it, I just couldn't do it.
Like I said, having a dedicated app for Appics is game changing. If that new Hive front end comes up with their own DApp, I might use it, then again, that stigma of short form content might keep me from doing it even with a mobile app.
There are some exciting things in the works over on Leo with Project Blank. I know we will never agree, but I think the powers that be need to come to some kind of armistice on short form content before it launches.
