Reviews are usually not my cup of tea, because whether you like or dislike a TV show (in this case, but the same goes for pretty much all entertainment) is mostly up to personal preference. Here, I make an exception, although I won't go much into the entertainment value of the show (just a little at the end). I will focus on internal logic & some historical details, since I'm interested in the topic, the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (or Varus Battle as it is widely known in Germany) & even took a course about the battle at university (which doesn't mean that much, since we have learned a lot more in the last 20 years). The show I'm talking about is Barbarians. Let's begin:
Reviews sind normalerweise nicht so mein Ding, da es Geschmackssache ist, ob man eine TV-Serie (in diesem Fall, gilt aber für alle anderen Arten der Unterhaltung) mag, oder nicht. Hier mache ich mal eine Ausnahme, auch wenn ich nicht allzu sehr auf den Unterhaltungswert eingehe (nur ein bißchen am Schluß). Ich konzentriere mich auf die interne Logik & einige historische Details, da mich das Thema Varusschlacht interessiert & ich sogar an der Uni einen Kurs darüber hatte (was nicht viel heißt, da es in den letzten 20 Jahren einige neue Erkenntnisse gab). Die Serie, die ich hier bespreche, nennt sich Barbaren.
The makers of the show tried to be historically accurate, it seems, but they didn't necessarily get the period right. In the above case, the shields are OK, I think, but the helmets are too standardised. Overall in the series, almost all Roman helmets are of the Imperial Gallic type. While at the time of the battle, 9 AD, there was not much standardisation. Most helmets were of an older Celtic type. Also, where are the pila in that scene? It seems they are all holding swords.
Es scheint, daß die Macher versuchten, historisch akkurat zu sein. Sie haben aber nicht notwendigerweise die richtige Periode getroffen. Im obigen Schnappschuß sind die Schilde OK, denke ich, aber die Helme zu standardisiert. Allgemein scheint man in der Serie fast ausschließlich Helme vom Typ Weisenau zu sehen. Nur waren die zur Zeit der Schlacht, 9 n.Chr., nicht Standard. Die meisten Helme waren von einem älteren, keltischen Typus. & wo sind die Pila in dieser Szene? Alle scheinen nur Schwerter zu halten.
Here's some nice accuracy, paired with creative license & some nonsense. The Germanic shield design reflects what we know, but I would expect at least in some cases hide to strengthen them, particularly the edges should be strengthened. The body paint is OK. We know that some Germanic tribes used it, but not how widespread it was or the designs. The headgear of some Germans here is pure fantasy, though.
Hier sieht man Sorgfalt, kreative Freiheit & Nonsens in einem Bild. Die germanischen Schilde sind ordentlich gemacht, auch wenn ich hier & da mal Lederbespannung & Randverstärkung erwartet hätte. Die Körperbemalung ist OK. Manche Germanenstämme nutzten diese. Man weiß nur nicht, wie weit verbreitet sie war. Die seltsamen Kopfbedeckungen sind reine Phantasie.
Speaking of pure fantasy: Where does all the fire come from? Aside from the fact that the Germans would have had problems to gather enough material that would burn so severe for a prolonged time, the area where the battle took place was supposed to be marshy & on 2 of the 3 days of battle there were heavy thunderstorms. Anyway, the combat scenes, doesn't matter whether mass combat or individual, are abysmal.
Wo wir gerade bei Phantasie sind: Wo kommt das ganze Feuer her? Mal abgesehen davon, daß es schwierig gewesen wäre, soviel Material zu sammeln, das längere Zeit so heftig brennt, war das Schlachtfeld in marschigem Gelände & an 2 von 3 Tagen gab es heftige Gewitter. Aber die Kampfszenen, egal ob Getümmel oder Zweikampf, sind eh grauenhaft.
This is an example of a stupid individual fighting scene. Arminius here uses his gladius to slice (!) through his opponents chain maille. Which in & of itself is ridiculous enough, the splashing blood just adds more nonsense.
Dies ist ein Beispiel einer hirnrissigen Zweikampfszene. Arminius schneidet mit seinem Gladius durch das Kettenhemd seines Gegners. Was an sich schon lächerlich genug ist, das spritzende Blut macht es nur noch unsinniger.
The blacksmith is hammering some obviously cold metal? & these cylindrical thingies standing around there seem supposed to be kilns or furnaces, while they seem unsuitable for either purpose.
Der Schmied hämmert auf einem offenbar kalten Stück Metall herum? & die zylindrischen Dinger drumherum sollen anscheinend Brenn- oder Schmelzöfen sein, sind für beides aber eher ungeeignet.
Purple, so much purple! Considering that purple, the colour of kings, was quite expensive back then & this village is supposed to be rather poor, you wonder where all the purple comes from (& what it is good for). & look at the 'wall' of the building. What is this?
Alles so schön purpur hier. Wenn man bedenkt, daß Purpur die Farbe der Könige & entsprechend teuer war, während das Dorf angeblich sehr arm ist, fragt man sich doch, woher all dieses Purpur kommen soll (& wozu es gut sein soll). Man beachte auch die 'Wand' des Gebäudes. Was soll das sein?

Speaking of poverty. The above shows the inside of the house of Segimer, father of Arminius, & supposedly the most important chieftain of the Cherusci (also speaking for them at the thing in the show). But his rather small house is virtually empty. Even if the village is as poor as they allege in the show, there should be a bit more bling. & then there are these 'windows'. Haven't heard of windows in Germanic houses of that time.
Ein echt armes Dorf. Oben sieht man das Innere des Hauses von Segimer, Arminius' Vater & der wichtigste Fürst der Cherusker (der in der Serie auch beim Thing für sie spricht). Dennoch ist sein recht kleines Haus fast völlig leer. Selbst wenn das Dorf so arm ist wie behauptet, sollte da doch etwas mehr Protz sein. & dann sind da noch diese 'Fenster'. Nie davon gehört, daß germanische Häuser dieser Zeit Fenster gehabt hätten.

The village is so poor that they can't afford to give a few goats to the Romans, yet the people seem extra-ordinarily well-fed.
Das Dorf ist so arm, daß man es sich nicht leisten kann, den Römern ein paar Ziegen zu geben, trotzdem sind die Leute außerordentlich wohlgenährt.
When the Romans first show up in the village, they carry with them the aquila, the legionary eagle. This is the most important symbol of a legion. Yet, the aquilifer (standard bearer) was only accompanied by the centurio & 6 (!) legionaires in potentially hostile territory. Highly dubious. (Also: stirrups!?)
Als die Römer zum ersten Mal im Dorf auftauchen, bringen sie den Aquila mit, den Legionsadler. Das wichtigste Symbol einer Legion. & doch wird der Aquilifer (Standartenträger) in potentiell feindlichem Gebiet nur von einem Zenturio & 6 (!) Legionären begleitet. Höchst zweifelhaft. (Noch dazu: Steigbügel!?)
Trousers! Can't rule them out for the time in Germania, but they were mostly worn by auxiliary troops. Roman legionaires only adopted them later, I think.
Hosen! Kann man zwar für die Zeit in Germanien nicht ausschließen, aber die wurden meist von Auxiliartruppen getragen, nicht von römischen Legionären.
Strangely empty forests, no undergrowth, no dead wood & only one tree species.
Seltsam leerer Wald, kein Unterwuchs, keine toten Bäume & nur eine Baumart.
The face mask is a nice touch, because it looks like the most prominent find at Kalkriese. But it was probably only for ceremonial use. Riding through a forest with such restricted vision is not recommended. Helmet & mask should be polished, BTW. Legionaires would be reprimanded for such a lack of care.
Die Maske ist ein nettes Detail, da sie dem berühmtesten Fund von Kalkriese nachempfunden ist. Wurde aber wohl eher nur für Zeremonien genutzt. Mit derart eingeschränktem Sichtfeld durch einen Wald zu reiten, ist nicht empfehlenswert. Helm & Maske sollten übrigens auch poliert sein. Legionäre mit derart ungepflegter Ausrüstung bekämen so einiges zu hören.
The village is shown as being in the middle of a forest. There are no fields for crops to grow, only these small patches with grain between the houses. There is also no room for animals to graze. & nobody in the village seems to be productive in any way, with the exception of the blacksmith (although, well, hammering cold iron is hardly productive). What are these people living from & how can some of them be so fat?
Das Dorf liegt anscheinend mitten im Wald. Es gibt keine Felder für Getreide, nur diese kleinen Flächen zwischen den Häusern. Es gibt auch keine Möglichkeit, Tiere weiden zu lassen. Noch dazu scheint niemand im Dorf irgendwie produktiv tätig zu sein, mit Ausnahme des Schmieds (sofern man das Rumhämmern auf kaltem Metall als produktiv bezeichnen kann). Wovon leben die Leute & wie können einige davon so fett sein?
& then there is this 'palisade'. This is supposed to be the most important chief of the Cherusci & they don't even have a ditch around the village?
& dann gibt's da noch diese 'Palisade'. Das ist das Dorf des wichtigsten Fürsten der Cherusker & man hat nicht mal einen Graben angelegt?
Having said all that, for a German production, Barbarians seems to be quite decent. The fight scenes are horrible, but that's standard nowadays. At least the makers have tried to stay historically somewhat accurate, though the story itself has not much in common with the actual battle. The storyline is a bit kitschy, but not (yet) too bad.
Nach all der Kritik muß ich aber doch sagen, daß 'Barbaren' für eine deutsche Produktion recht ordentlich ist. Die Kampfszenen sind grausig, aber das ist heutzutage ja Standard. Wenigstens haben die Macher versucht, der Historie halbwegs gerecht zu werden, auch wenn die Story mit der historischen Schlacht nur wenig zu tun hat. Die Geschichte ist etwas kitschig, aber (noch) nicht zu schlimm.
I've only watched the first episode yet, but I will at least watch the 2nd episode to see how it develops.
Habe nur die erste Folge gesehen, aber ich werde mir wenigstens noch die zweite ansehen, bevor ich entscheide, ob ich mir auch den Rest reinziehe.
