Last year I found a little gem of a church in Saravali, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary When I did the research for my hive blog about the church, I noticed that there was something called a castle in Saravali. When I had been there last year I completely missed it. But at the end of March, I finally got around to go to Saravali again & take photos of the 'castle'.Letztes Jahr fand ich eine hübsche, kleine Kirche in Saravali, die Kirche Mariä Himmelfahrt

Back when I visited the church, I only noticed these suspicious 'stones' in a nearby field. They looked like some kind of old concrete. I checked the area a little bit, but didn't find anything else, because at that point I was too lazy to go uphill again.

Had I gone a little bit further, I probably would have noticed this:Hätte ich dies getan, wäre mir wohl folgendes aufgefallen:

Looks like part of a castle. So I went up onto the hill to check it out. Sadly, it's a bit of a disappointment.

Not much left of that castle. Even less than what you see. Nothing in the above picture is originally from the little fortress that existed here. Now it is just a viewing platform, with some replicated castle features. But, well, the view alone is worth a visit:Nicht viel übrig von der Burg.

You can see why they may have built a castle there in the first place. You have a great view over Patras, right to the coast. The whole Patras plain is visible, including all the southern approaches. But of course you also have a great view of the Panachaiko mountain range to the east (still snow on the mountain tops when I was there end of March).Man sieht, warum diese Stelle sich für eine Burg quasi anbietet.

Which brings us to the history of the castle. It was probably originally built by the 'Franks', which essentially means 'crusaders from the former Frankish Empire'. After the sack of Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade, the Franks ruled much of the former Byzantine Empire in what is called Frankokratia. The Peloponnese mostly became the Principality of Achaea. Was uns zur Burggeschichte bringt.

Not much is known about the Saravali Castle itself. It was built either in the 13th century by the original crusaders or in the 14th century by an Italian lord. It was destroyed in 1467, but rebuilt by 1471. After that, it is lost in time. Who knows why it was given up. It is a prime location, after all. Below are 4 photos to give a panoramic view from the platform from south to north:Über die Saravaliburg selber weiß man nicht viel.

Interestingly, a part of the destroyed castle may have played a part in the Greek War of Independence of 1821. During the Siege of Patras, on 9 March 1822, the Turks attacked & advanced. In the Battle of Saravali, Theodoros Kolokotronis rallied his troops & forced the Ottoman forces to retreat into their fortresses of Patras & Rio.Ein Teil der zerstörten Burg könnte noch eine Rolle in der Griechischen Revolution von 1821 gespielt haben.

Being me, I wanted to see the actual castle & was disappointed by its absence. I looked around a bit to find something original, but there wasn't much. Maybe some of the rougher stones around there, held together by rather crude mortar as seen above, are from the castle, but who knows.

From what I have read, the lower part of the wall to the right in the photo above might be part of the original castle, but even that is dubious.

Even though there is not much of a castle at the castle plaza, the view alone is worth a visit. The area as such is nice for hiking, & the church nearby is also worth a visit. The exact location is Saravali 26500, Agiou Nikolaou You have to walk south from the aforementioned church along a small alleyway to get there. & that's it for this ex-castle.
