Some days, your body taps out before your brain even gets a chance to argue. Today was one of those days. By noon, the idea of my usual lunch break walk felt about as appealing as small talk with a chatbot (spoiler: it sucks!). So I did the only sensible thing: bailed on productivity and submerged myself in a hot bath like a dramatic Victorian poet with joint pain. Zero regrets.

But here’s the twist: winter’s grip is loosening. Slowly. Awkwardly. Like someone trying to leave a party they weren’t really invited to (especially they didn’t bring snow or warm sun!). Sunset has inched its way to a civilized 17:10, which meant that when I finally emerged from my afternoon hibernation called work, at 16:00, there was still enough light left to walk like a functioning adult. Shocking. The functioning part, that is.

The canal was serving mirror-core reflections and bare trees doing their best haunted ballerina impressions. The sky? Soft flex. That golden-hour kind of smugness where you’re like, “Okay yes, I see you, light. You win.” That quiet water, though? Looked peaceful enough to forgive a missed morning or lunch break walk and pretend it didn’t silently judge me for swapping endorphins for eucalyptus-scented laziness.

Somewhere around the 3.5k step mark, I passed the kind of power line that looks like it’s auditioning for a solo in an art school film, symmetrical, lonely, trying too hard. Honestly, relatable. By the time I made it back, the sun had dipped just low enough to say “nice try” without fully setting the mood for guilt.

Anyway, the moral of the story is: skip the walk if you must. But if you can catch a sunset and sneak your steps in while pretending it was all part of the plan? Even better.

And yes, I’m counting the bath as part of my recovery protocol. Science probably agrees.
