The town of Pana in Pennsylvania has so much to offer, from its good food, and its intriguing landscapes, to its amazing people who speak nothing but refined English. And according to what I read in the history books, their culture is very refined and they practice a lot of magic.
And even though I was very excited to see all it had to offer, my main interest was my Uncle Bob. Uncle Bob is my mother's younger brother who had stayed with us a couple of times before finally moving to Pana. He is quite the chatterbox and loves making people smile even though he doesn't get paid anything in return. During my first break-up when I was four, uncle Ben was there, he took me out for ice cream and made sure I returned stronger. We had such a tight bond you would easily mistake us for brothers. And this Christmas, I was very excited to see him again.
It's been over twelve years since I had seen uncle Bob and my excitement grew as the plane touched the ground and my parents and I drove to his house. On our way there, there was a lot of beauty that filled our eyes. Starting from the waterfall that is just a mile away from the airport. It had fishes popping in and out of it which were very intriguing until a dolphin popped up from within it, bursting water out from its blow hole elegantly, before sinking back into the water, it was truly the most remarkable thing I have seen in my life.
Three hours later, we arrived at Uncle Bob's house, which looked like the castle in the Hotel Transylvania movies, with spikey rooftops and multiple windows, and a big gate. When we arrived, Uncle Bob was already waiting for us. He was dressed in black trousers, a black shirt, and a leather jacket, black outside with a red interior, which was also long enough to touch his feet. He also wore a black boot, which had a very thick sole.
We exchange greetings and laughed a lot before venturing into his house. It was one of the biggest houses I have seen in my life. It had a lot of rooms and a lot of servants just like how a castle should be.
That night we had dinner and reminisced on old memories. Before we all retired to bed, that's when it all happened.
The room I was given was bigger than the one I had at home, with a bigger bed, heavily illuminated, decorated, and booming with the scent of Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Vitae Cologne Forte.
I jumped into my pajamas, and straight to bed before switching off the lights. That's when I began to hear it, silent echoes that sounded like light hymns from a ghostly princess. At first, I ignored it thinking it was just me overreacting from being in a huge castle. But, the echo continued, so, I gently got out of my bed, replanting my bare feet back on the cold tiled floor.
The sound seemed to be coming from outside the window, so I approached it and pulled away the curtains from view to reveal what seemed to be a wooden hut outside the window. The hut though far from the building, was still close enough, so close that I could see shadows wiggle around the brightly illuminated room, through its window.
At first, I thought it was just a place where the workers went to chill for the night until I saw him, it was uncle Bob, acting very sneaky in his still black outfit as he steadily made his way to the hut. He went into the hut and then the echo intensified. Now, my curiosity peaked.
I needed to know, so I hurriedly dashed out of my room and down the stairs and into the kitchen which had a transparent glass door that leads outside, before being intercepted by the butler.
" Hello young master, and where might you be hurriedly dashing off to?", The butler asked.
I looked Into his eyes for a minute, they were pale white, with very obvious red, blood vessels bulging out of the white. His skin looked pale under the rooms light and his clothes had red stains randomly plastered all over him from his shoes up to his lips, which were bleeding red.
"Hmmm, sorry, I just saw my uncle Bob out the back and I would love to say hi to him..", I replied still bewildered by the butler's appearance.
"Oh!, ... I'm sorry young master but your uncle is currently busy at the moment, and I can't allow you to trespass further .."
"Trespass?!", I yelled in a bit of shock.
"Yes, young master. So, please, return to your room while I fetch your uncle."
"Okay,".., I said, not quite sure of what to do next, so I slowly returned to my room while the butler watched with his creepy dead eyes. But before I left I noticed something, the butler had no reflection. And that, I could tell by staring into the reflective pots, pans, and mirrors that were strategically placed around the kitchen.
'I knew it .." I said underneath my breath as I quickly hurried up the stairs and into my room.
Once again I stared out the window and continued to watch the figures move about in the heavily illuminating light of the hut.
I pondered on and on, putting the pieces together, before finally arriving at a conclusion....Vampires.
After much staring at the window, I finally saw the butler leave for the hut, and then, I knew it was time to act. Now, all the time I spent watching vampire movies are about to pay off. So, I went to my bag and took out my pencil, which I happened to have brought in excess as I loved drawing, and then slowly and steadily I began to make my way downstairs, and once I arrived again at the kitchen, the lights began to flicker and the echo got louder.
The kitchen was empty, but the now flickering lights made it hard to see. But still, I carefully approached the door with a pencil in my hand.
"What are you doing ?!.." a voice spoke from behind me.
But this time, I wasn't going to stop, so I dashed out of the kitchen and into the backyard.
"Stop!!"...the voice yelled.
But I kept running to my goal just like any protagonist would. At this point I could hear the footsteps of the enemy steadily after me, yelling for me to stop. They grew in number as I continuously sprinted to the hut. But it was too late, as I burst into the room with my pencil armed and ready for battle, but what I saw left me scared for life.
It turned out the hut, was rated eighteen, and the red stains on the butler were just red wine, and after that wild night, I know now, that vampires do not exist.
