Yarilo is the sun god of the ancient Slavs. Until 1492 in Russia this day celebrated the beginning of the new year, and the first days of March were called - Yarilinymi days.
From the sun, the earth warms up - it's "yarit", all the living things stretch to it to gain strength and grow stronger. It was believed that the deity raises the winter on his pitchfork - the sun's rays. It was time to start agricultural work, so the people said: "Jarilo has risen - take a man for a pitchfork."
Yarilo was not only the sun god, but also the god of fertility, and therefore pregnant women on this day tried to bask in the sun and gain strength for bearing a child. And grandmothers, midwives, drowned the midday snow in the house, and washed their hands with melt water and washed their hands to "become clean and accept the child".
On this day, if snow fell at night, mothers sent children to place a path to the well and a bridge on a pond or river. They believed that this should bring happiness to the house, and give the children health.
Since the antiquity celebrated New Year on Yaril, a tradition arose not to work on this day - and it lasted for a long time, up to the 19th century. The Yariliny roundelays began - celebrations in honor of the coming of spring.

Mara-Marena is a mighty and formidable Deity, the Goddess of Winter and Death, the wife of Koshchei, the sister of Zhiva and Lelya.
In the people she was called Kikiimora one-eyed. Preserved, remembered on this day: "I fucked Yarilo winter (Maren!) On the pitchfork."
They remember and honor this day the goddess that will lead the people to the Kalinov Bridge. The possessions of Marena, according to ancient Tales, lie behind the black Currant River separating Java and Nav, through which the Kalinov Bridge, guarded by the Three-Headed Serpent, is thrown.
People's signs to this day: If on this day at noon the sun is visible, spring will be early, if snowstorm blows - the whole week is snowmaking. The more snow falls, the higher the grain yield. If the windows and frames are sweating in the frost, expect warming. Up "snow plants" climb up the glass - the frost continues, their shoots bent - to the thaw.
