1901 In the State of New York for the first time in the world introduced car numbers
The first official car numbers were introduced in the US on April 25, 1901 in the state of New York. All car owners are required to register their names and address, as well as a description of their car. In addition, motorists were required to pay one dollar for registration. After that, they were given a small plate on which the initials of the owner were indicated. In the first year 954 numbers were issued.
As for Russia, which took over foreign experience a little later, to register cars on them hung numbers on a bicycle pattern. Only here the numbers have been increased 5-8 times.
But our authorities also hastened to legalize the light signs. Paragraph 15 of the "Mandatory Regulations on driving on cars in the city of St. Petersburg" for 1902 read: "Cars must be equipped with flashlights turned back, with a number written on the lamp glass."
In addition, it was universally established rule of annual replacement of numbers. "It is approaching March 15, when Moscow motorists who want to drive cars must submit their cars for inspection and get a new license plate in the city government," the newspaper wrote in 1911.
The car plates of that time were very heavy and uncomfortable. To fix the license plate on his car, its owner had to show miracles of ingenuity, because the "regular" place for fixing license plates on cars at that time was not provided. It was recommended to tie the numbers with leather straps to the springs of the front and rear axles. At the same time, it was difficult to consider the figures depicted on these license plates.
