Annually on March 6, many countries celebrate the professional holiday of dentists - International Dentist Day (International Dentist Day) or Dentist's Day (Dentist's Day). Dentistry is one of the oldest branches of medicine. And no matter how we are treated to dentists, but without visiting the office of this specialist today in the maintenance of health, alas, not do. Only a small part of mankind can avoid the problems of patients with teeth, gum disease, malocclusion. The main part of the population of the Earth at least once in my life suffered the fate of sitting in the armchair of a dentist. Fortunately, science and technology are developing at such a rapid rate that over the past few decades the trip to the dentist is becoming less and less like a medieval execution.
The choice of the date of today's holiday was one of the outstanding inventions in the dental business. In 1790, John Greenwood, a dentist from Washington and a personal dentist George Washington, invented a dental log. The first stomatological boron was a heavy foot-operated drill, which did not stop Greenwood from making four removable dentures for Washington. Interestingly, as a foot drive boron Greenwood adapted wheel spinning wheel, which was used by his mother. And only a century later, in 1907, an electric drill appeared.
Among other "dental" innovations - the invention of a tube for toothpaste by Dr. Washington Sheffield, the release of the world's first toothbrush with artificial synthetic nylon fiber instead of natural bristles.
International dentist's day was initially celebrated only in the USA, having the status of a national professional holiday. But over the years the tradition of congratulating the dentists on that day spread far beyond North America. One of the first countries to follow was India.
Today, indispensable activities on this day are lectures and educational work on the need for regular and thorough dental care. Particular attention is paid to the prevention of child caries.
