1935 Wallace Carothers invented nylon
American chemist Wallace Hume Carothers from the central laboratory of the firm "DuPont de Nemours" in Wilmington in 1934 synthesized polyamide resin. February 28, 1935 on its basis Carothers with a group of chemists from the same laboratory created a new synthetic fiber. This is the first synthetic fiber in the world called nylon. The work on the further development of the fiber continued. But on April 29, 1937, after a prolonged depression, as officially stated, he committed suicide by throwing himself out of the window of his laboratory. He never saw the triumphal march of his offspring in the world. October 27, 1938, the leaders of the company "DuPont de Nemours" announced the invention of nylon. And in 1939, nylon went on sale in one of the department stores in Wilmington in the US. These were the world's first nylon stockings, which became a sensation. After just six months in New York, on the day of the sale, 5 million pairs of these stockings were sold.
