Hey everyone! The markets have been acting a bit crazy lately, hasn't it? Even though US Treasury yields recently spiked to 5.2%, we actually saw the Nasdaq climb by 1.19% and the S&P 500 edge up by 0.73%, mostly heavily carried by the M7 stocks.
On the flip side of things, storage companies took a massive beating. Western Digital plunged 10.22% and SanDisk dropped 3.79%.
It’s funny how hardware and memory businesses work—just a single news headline about Toshiba expanding its hard drive production lines was enough to send WD's stock tumbling down.
JPMorgan mentioned that hyperscalers should start turning solid profits by 2028, but who knows if that will translate to component stocks rebounding in 2027.
Right now, the cheapest asset on the board seems to be the 30-year US Treasury ETF. But with all this volatility, if the Fed decides to hike rates one or two more times, we could see those prices drop even further.
We are also seeing high-dividend stocks like Altria and REIT ETFs like VNQ bleeding out right now, and SCHD isn't doing too hot either.
So what do we do? For me, the core philosophy of asset allocation is buying assets when their prices drop below their intrinsic value and regularly rebalancing your portfolio.
The whole point of building wealth for retirement isn't just to chase massive gains, but to avoid catastrophic losses (like the 2000 Dot-com crash) and let the magic of compound interest do its job over decades.
Sure, AI theme ETFs will likely go up in the long run. But if you stuff your retirement portfolio full of highly volatile assets, you'll be tossing and turning at night worrying about massive drawdowns.
