According to new Verge article, Apple slowdowns your iPhone to prevent unexpected shutdowns due to deterioration in battery capacity over time. It reduces your CPU cycle so that your battery last longer but also causes lags and major slowdowns.

One of the users in twitter pointed out that his CPU cycle dropped in half compared to the first time he got his phone. After replacing the battery he continue using his phone in its default CPU clock rate.
