The approach of autumn, which is incidentally a very beautiful and pleasant season, fills me with the nostalgia of summer that is ready to retreat from the part of the world where I live. I know that the end of summer will not be sudden, especially since it has gained more strength from the global warming phenomenon, but September already means the end of the holidays.
When I think that I have to wait almost a year until the next holiday (for me, the holiday is the same as the sea), nostalgia turns into almost depression. Depression is also understandable if I think that I'm at the age when I know that there won't be many more summers for me...
I can say I'm in a blue state, but it's more like black and white!
I have the most pleasant holiday moments as well as the greatest nostalgia for Greece, the island of Thassos. I didn't think about it until now, but now I have to. I would like to see what Greece would look like in black and white, so I will try to convert some of the many photos I have from color to black and white.
I think it's going to be a very long trip in black and white to the place where the colors are so beautiful!
I remember the killer heat of summer, the dry grass, the hot stones, and the olive trees trying to provide some shade. It seems a harsh climate and to give more drama to what has been said I have taken the colors out of the landscape!
Because I mentioned hot stones. I visited a place full of stones. Actually, not only stones but marble too. The island of Thassos has large marble quarries. The marble that was used to build most of the temples and palaces of ancient Greece, Egypt, Phoenicia...
Here, in these photos, are the ruins of one of the ancient fortresses built on the island of Thassos more than two thousand years ago. Near the beach at Aliki.
Watching these columns, now fallen to the ground, I wonder how they have survived so far, primarily in the face of man-made destruction.
Because humans have built such beauties as humans have destroyed.
I have great admiration for ancient Greece and all that it has given to the world, from the notion of democracy to the arts and philosophy. I still can't understand how such societies ended up being destroyed...
In fact, I'm beginning to understand it now, when I see that a large part of people allow themselves to be manipulated and used to demolish what has been built so far.
I started to like Greece in black and white. My Greece is a Greece in the past, albeit a near past. I like to look at the past with pleasant nostalgia...
I like to approach black-and-white photography as something ordinary. I choose to write the same stories that I'm used to, the only difference is that they don't have the "colors" I'm used to.
