I think we can all agree that there is always an explanation for our actions. Sometimes we want to give that explanation, sometimes not, depending on our interest. If we want to hide something, of course, we will avoid the explanation and if we see that we are not understood we will insist on explaining what we have done.

In the concrete case of black and white photography of course there are many explanations for choosing this option. Most of them will refer to what a color photo conveys, more dynamism, more realism, and more details and black and white, more mystery and a certain mood, other than the usual one.

I would like, because of the nostalgia I feel before winter starts, to share some summer photos from the sea. Colour pictures would be more useful to show the sea, the sand, the sun... but I miss them and I want the pictures to express my sorrow and sadness that I am no longer there.

Moreover, the photos are taken on the Aegean island of Thassos. I arrived there late, very late for me, if I think that I would like to spend all my summers there, all the summers I have left. I've already lost two because of the pandemic.

To give an explanation, of the many possible explanations, I chose black and white to express my regret that I didn't discover this island much earlier when I was young and only took black and white photographs!

Thassos Island

I was in Thassos Island accompanied by two ladies, one of whom is my wife. Although this island, like all the others, is surrounded by the sea and countless beaches, my ladies and I preferred more to walk around. Very close to the small hotel where we stayed started the pine forest. Every morning we would go for a long walk through the forest, then the olive grove and then to the beach...

... then the walk moves to the small town of Limenaria. Walking around the shops and stalls.

The small town of Limenaria was set on the edge of a hill, hence the sloping streets and stairs. I love them!

The town is very cramped, the houses are close together and there are no yards. As you can see here, the courtyards are in flower pots and children play on the stairs.

Nothing is simpler, more unsophisticated, more natural, and more beautiful than an island beach. Oh, how I miss it!

Why do I like it so much on the island? Well, because, due to its isolation from the mainland, it lives a bit in the past. Time is out of step, it's left a little behind... Good food for nostalgia!
The cars are older models, used until they give up the ghost.

Boats that probably can no longer be used are abandoned not far from the small harbor. Boats are important for fishermen and more powerful motorboats have been brought in. I like the old, discarded ones but of course, I like to see them, otherwise, I wouldn't have the courage to try to go out to sea in them.

Black and white is nostalgia. Maybe a little pessimism but I don't want it to be like that, I keep hoping that this summer there won't be any obstacles in front of me to prevent me from going to Thassos again!
