Sowing My 2024 Onion Seeds
Here in New England, we plant LONG DAY ONIONS.
The farther NORTH you are, the longer DAYLIGHT HOURS you have. We have longer days compared to the Equator... SURE< it is hotter there, but, our days are longer, during Summer.
Onion Bulbs take their sizing cues from Daylight Length hours. Sure, right NOW, it's a cold, February day, but never better time to get some Onion Seed Sown! I am planting
• Red Wethersfield
• Red Burgundy
• Sweet Utah Yellow
• Pompeii White, and some
• Red Beard Bunching Onion.
Planting now, gives me a head start for stronger, healthier Onion, come time to transplant them outside, to the Garden, after my last frost days.
Onion seeds are TINY TINY TINY. So, A BIG part of onion planting success, is making sure my seed starter soil is finely sifted.
Only a week or so, after sowing seeds!
When it comes to onion, I follow a process called OVERSEED. That is, I put LOTS of seed into the trays. Reason is simple, ONIONS are easy to tease apart, and plant individually, later. the onion root is one simple straight root and doesn't get tangled, so, come spring when I go outside, it is easy to pull them apart, and plant with proper spacing for decent sized onion bulbs.
