This past weekend my hometown sponsored an Old Tyme Christmas event. For four blocks of our downtown mainstreet - starting with the Old State Capitol pictured above to the lighting of the giant Christmas Tree atop the main street hill pictured at the end - the area dressed itself up in Christmas cheer.
You could take a nostalgic horse-drawn carriage ride and see the Christmas lights:
You could stop by and visit a live Nativity Scene:
You could take a break and hang out for a few minutes at Lincoln Park across from the Old State Capitol. I think Ol' Abe Lincoln would enjoy it if you sat down on the bench next to him and snapped a few photos.
If you feel like shopping, which is what the local merchants are hoping you will do, you can stop in the Habitat for Humanity Resale Store. I volunteer there and they do a lot of good work for the community. And we had batches and batches of homemade cookies to give away to hungry shoppers!
And what would an Old Tyme Christmas be without a parade? This annual parade brings Santa to town, where he takes up residence in his house after the parade.
You can see all the good little boys and girls lined up to get a chance to sit on Santa's lap and whisper in his ear their Christmas wishes, coming out with candy canes and smiles.
And at the end of the evening - the traditional lighting of the community Christmas Tree.
